Insert drawing view with current camera

Hi, 

I cant figure out how to insert a drawing view using the saved camera state from the assembly.

In previous versions you could choose "current camera".

I usually right-click my design view and choose save camera in the position I want to show my assembly in the drawing. Then I create a drawing and insert the open assembly with current camera setting.

Any ideas where to look for this?

Can you create a Screencast demonstration?

I feel like a 1st day newbe - I can't create a custom view in drawing environment.

I have a named View Rep in the assembly, it shows in the drawing list, but doesn't create the view.

This was trivially easy in previous releases.

I even went into the Help and couldn't find an explaination (probably first time in 10 years for own need, other than to verify what others had questions about).

No view cube in Drawing View dialog.

I created to locked View Reps in assembly - one named Custom and the other named 2nd Try.

They show up in the Drawing View dialog box, but I sure can't figure out how to place these views.

Edit: OK, now I am making progress - I found the view cube.

Well, I figured out how to create a "Current" (Custom) view, but now, is there a way to create views from my list of View Reps?

With more experimentation I am finding the stuff that is brought over in View Reps.

I know about the custom view. however, it was the Current View (as pr image in my earlier post) I was looking for.

In my workflow I arrange my view in the assmbly befor I place it in the drawing. In earlier versions I could use Current, but now I have to drop-down, click custom and then arrange my view again. (As Mr Mather did in about 2.12 in the video above.)
I am aware of that orientation does not follow view rep when inserting in drawing, as he mention in the video. It did not in previous versions either.

Anyways, I would like Current as an option in the viewcube drop-down.
Maybe a tick for "Orientation from View Rep" could be useful?

Definitely a regression (though pretty minor) in 2016.  I also like to arrange my model orientation before placing the base view, and this is now not possible.

The 'tick for "Orientation from View Rep" ' would be a nice addition, and sounds like one for Inventor IdeaStation.  If you post something there, come back here with a link to it so we can all vote for it.

I want to just align my model how I want it placed in the drawing and use "Current View".

I don't use representations. Don't want to use them. This has been my workflow in Inventor for years.

Thanks everyone for your contribuion on this topic!

JDMather's post explained the new workflow in 2016 to using the current camera as the "Current View" in 2015. This is slightly different than in 2015 but provides more flexiblity by using Custom View Orientation...

One note: you will have to keep the assembly open to use this feature, which is a consistent behavior as in 2015.

Another way is to create the drawing from the 3D model browser. 

Like shown on these pictures.

The base view will be based on the current view of the 3d model.

Thanks for the video on inserting a current view in 2017. Why they improved it to this obscure workflow beats me !

Only it always creates new idw.

It is obviously not possible to place view on sheet in the file you already have.

Still nice option and much easier than struggling with "custom view Orientation" from view cube.

Oh that is super helpful thanks! Whilst it did open the view in a new drawing, I was able to copy and paste it over to the drawing I was working in!

I have the same problem, it refers the process to a new drawing sheet. You can place the 'current view' by right clciking the view cube and hit 'custom view orientation', but this takes longer than the original process.

Why on earth Autodesk would take something that worked amazingly, and quickly, and make it convolted, clunky and slow is well behind my level of comprehension.

It used to be as simple as setting the view you wanted in 3D, then placing it in the 2D and tick 'current view' in the position drop down. Now it defaults to 'front', which is not helpful at all in alot of instances.

Hi Daniel,

Indeed, the workflow has been change since Inventor 2016. The objective is to enable View Cube in drawing view preview so that the user can manipulate the view just like in the model. Like JD mentioned earlier, if you open the part or assembly first, the default view orientation is captured accordingly.

The default view orientation can be set in the View Preference in Styles and Standards. Go to Manage -> Styles and Standards -> View Preference -> Default View Orientation -> select Model. You want to save the change back to the Styles Library if you use library standards. Or, you can save it to a custom style and standard in the template.
