iAssembly and Parts List in IV2018

Hi guys,

I have come across with some phenomena in IV2018 I have not seen before. In the attached folder there are three files. Assembly1 is an iAssembly. In drawing Colet.idw I want to read quantity for Colet part from iAssembly. I start Part List and select the iAssembly as a source. Place the Part List. Now I edit the part list and select different child of the iAssembly. The quantity of the parts are errors out. To fix it – I have to get back to the iAssembly and make the other child active.

Now, why is it a problem. The same drawing can be used in two different assemblies. If I send one set of drawings to one manufacture and another – to someone else – one of the drawing’s will not show the quantity of parts at all. Unless I make the corresponding child for the drawing current. Or am I missing something here?

Hi Igor,

It not something new for 2018, it appeared in 2016 version either.

Currently, it's a limitation and I'd suggest you can select all to avoid anything missing for your workflow.

Now, what to do with this "view"? Please see the attached. And may I say - that I have provided the forum with absolutely simplified version of the issue. Now - what IF there are at least ten children in the iAssembly?

Hi Igor,

If I understood the issue correctly, I think you need to generate the iAssembly member files. It looks like the PartsList points to the iAssembly factory file, not the member file. You will need the member file to have proper documentation. Could you try generating the members?

generating all the members fixes the issue for me and I can toggle from Assembly1-1 to 1-2 without issue..

No idea how you got in that state in the first place but it all works just fine after generating the members..

Well, maybe it was one of these days... That's why I have called it a phenomena. 🙂

I will keep an eye on it and hopefully - it was just one off glitch on my side of things.

Hi Igor,

No worries! I got confused all the time. iPart/iAssembly is not the most intuitive workflow in Inventor. I like to tell our users that it is better to treat iPart/iAssembly like library components, kind of like Content Center parts. You author them, create the members, put them in a library, and reuse them. Try not to use it as in-developing components.
