How to make Template to open newly created files in home view

It seems I need the help of experts . I have 3 questions that I cannot find the answer to.

1) I have some old template files for part and weld-assy that when used will create a new file which starts in home view. I enclose them here.

As I remember, the only thing I had to do was to set the home view (iso with z = up) and save the file as template like that. I want to create new templates that works the same, but it seems I cannot do that anymore.

Did something change? If so - when and why? And how can I create such a template now?

2) When I create a new sketch in a newly created part file, the view flips around so that Y = upwards and not Z.

I hate that! Where can I turn it off? I do not want to turn on things or create things in the template, I just want the new file to open in ISO home view and not change when i click the sketch command. Current behaviour is unwanted, to put it mildly.

3) New assembly file from template: When created it opens in top view. That in turn makes it problematic to see how the first part is oriented when using "rotate x, y, or z" followed by "Place grounded at Origin", at which point the whole view flips around, causing confusion at least for me.

I would like the new assembly open in home view (I do not want to have to press F6) and stay there when i place the first component. How can I achieve that?

Please Look at enclosed files, and tell me how to create a new iam and ipn template that works alike!

Hi Gunnar,

I think I know what you want to do here. You want to keep the ViewCube with Z-up orientation. Also, you don't want the view to rotate when starting a new sketch. Here is what you need to do.

1) Change the template ViewCube orientation so that Z points to top. You need to look at the ViewCube Front. Go to the downward arrow button near the ViewCube -> Set Current View as Top.

2) Rotate the ViewCube so that it is isometrically oriented (Top, Front, and Right) -> click on the downward arrow button again -> Set Current View as Home -> Fit to View.

3) Make all origin planes visible.

4) Repeat the steps for all part and assembly templates.

After that, the issues should be gone. BTW, Step 3 avoids the unwanted view rotation on creating a new sketch.

Many thanks!

Hi Shiue. Thanks for answering.

Let me clarify a little:

I am well aware how to change the home view in a template, that is not the problem.

The problem is to make it "stick" to make a newly created file from that template, appear from start in the exact same way as the template has been saved, i.e. in the "home view".

I do NOT want to turn on the origin planes or the other work features to make that happen.

I also do NOT want the view to flip around when I press the "New sketch" command in a part file, I want the planes to appear then (not before), but no flipping.

-and

For assemblies, I want the newly created assembly to open in Home wiew, not TOP view (or front), but

I do NOT want the new assembly to flip around when I place the first part as "Place at origin".

->The workflow should be to start a new assembly with my modified template. The new file should open in home view and stay there. I want to be able to place a component, rotate it before placing and be able to see how it is aligned BEFORE I click "place grounded at origin".

Finally, I want to be able to do that without pressing F6 to correct the view before starting to work in a new file.

I hope that was a bit clearer.

Please note that this is a request not only from me. I have many customers who want the same behaviour, but now are force to use various workarounds.

Please advise again, how to make a template/setting which will make it possible, or if I have missed something.

Hi Gunnar!

I am sorry that I don't have other options to offer. What I described was indeed how I understood it worked. I fully understand the undesirable behaviors. And, I agree with you that they should be changed. However, at the moment, I don't have other workflows to share. Maybe other experts know alternative workflows that I am not aware.

Many thanks!

I just did a test, created a new Template file, changed the view-cube orientation so Z is up and saved it. Created a new file using that template and it stuck for me.

As for the the views moving around when creating sketches or placing parts, I agree there should be an option to turn that all off, there currently is not.

I am curoius how you managed to do that!

I have 2 computer running with Inventor Pro 2020. Neither of them will produce a new template that will make the home view stick. I do have an old part template that does, and it still sticks when I save it as a new template. In that file I have turned on the XY plane, so that that it wont flip when I create a new sketch. With that workaround I can use that one for parts.

But for assemblies I´m lost. I don´t have an old template that will retain the home view.
Could You please help med by attaching here an assembly template that works? It would be much appreciated!

I am using 2021 with the latest updates installed, possibly there are changes with this version that allows it?

My templates will not be much good to you using 2020 however.

Hello @gunnar_larsson, I think I managed to solve your "home view" problem, which I've faced as well, essentially by trial and error.

All you need to do is to open your teplate files, set them to the home view you desire, then go to the part/assembly tree, expand 'Representation', then expand 'View: Home view', then double click on the little padlock icon with 'Home view' next to it and see a little checkmark appear next to it.

Do this with all the files and hit save, from then on, every new part/assembly etc. should open in the home view.

As for the "new sketch" problem, everything you mentioned there should be easily done in the 'Options' panel. Access it through 'Tools>Options>Part'.

I'm sorry if i didn't get some of the designations correctly, after all, I'm using a Czech version of the program. Hope this answers your question.

Thanks Ondrej.

After a little fiddeling that worked on the assembly template, but not the part template.

However, since I already had a working part-template that opens in home view and does not rotate at "create 2D sketch", I could convert these 2 to welded and sheet metal so no I have a complete set of model templates.

Thanks again!

Hi @gunnar_larsson! Could you please share your Part, Assembly and Sheet Metal templates here since I too am desperately looking for a solution where any NEW Part, Assembly or Sheet Metal Part opens in the Isometric or desired Home View.

Currently, when I open a NEW PART (from the Home Screen or the Top Left New drop down box) it defaults to the TOP view since I have set TOP in the View Cube to Z+. Even though I also set the [Primary] View Representation in the Model Browser to my (Isometric) Home View, it only opens in that orientation when I use the OPEN dialogue box to open my templates and not when I create a NEW PART from the Inventor Interface.

I have managed to find a work around where I set the Startup Action (Tools>Application Options>General>Startup) to "File Open Dialog" and OPEN my Standard.ipt template from there whenever I start up Inventor. With this I lose the option to start a NEW PART from the beautiful and clean Inventor interface and have to manually navigate to the Templates folder whenever I need to open the template.

Sometimes you create a new file and want to open it in the home view. In this case, you need to create a template to make that happen. Also, you can get a free timeline template from Google Docs at https://docsandslides.com/googledocs/timeline/. To create a template, open your file manager and navigate to the directory where your file is stored on your computer. After right-clicking on the file, choose New > Template from the context menu. A new window will appear with the name of your newly created template. Click OK on the next window that appears, asking for confirmation before creating a new template for this file type (for example, RTF or DOCX). You can now name your template according to how you want it to appear in Windows Explorer or File Explorer.
