How to line up the middel of two parts in an assembly?

Hello,

I am creating an assembly and would like to line up the centreline of a face on one part with the centreline of a face on another part, but the constraint doesn't seem to work. The kind of thing I mean is shown in the attached image. How can I line up the two yellow axes drawn on the two parts shown? Using the mate constraint doesn't work. Is there a different way of achieving the desired effect? i.e. middle of one part mated to middle of another part?

Normally you can constrain the Origin axis or planes for that (depending on how you made the parts). If it doesn't work it is probably because there is already another mate present that interferes.

Attach your assembly here.

Ok, thanks, so I think it is to do with another mate. I want to do two things. I want the bottom face of the part 1 to mate with the top face of part 2, but with an offset. I also want the centrelines of the two faces to line up. This does not seem to be possible. Can anyone explain the correct way to do it? It works if there is no offset on the face mate constraint. I'm relatively new to Inventor and making assemblies.

I've uploaded a simple assembly demonstrating the issue.

Have you installed all Service Packs and Udates for your version of Inventor?

(iProperties would seem to indicate the correct answer is no)

You can do an offset - someone will post example in a few minutes.

I suspect you logic is all wrong on what you are doing, but without a real assembly/mechanism, I am not sure how to instruct.

I would almost never create an axis - use the Origin folder geometry.

One of your axis is an assembly level axis.

Neither of your parts is grounded?

Hi,

I made a little screencast that might explain a little about how to constrain your assembly.

Hope it helps.
