How to include Appearance name in .obj file

I would like to control the names of materials when I export an Inventor part to .obj format. When I parse the .mtl file that is created with the .obj file, I see that the surface materials are given color indices rather than "my surface" or whatever. How does one name a surface for export to the .obj file?

Hello @Anonymous,

I don't think there is a way to do so due to mesh body which usually nameless.

Thanks!

Maybe the better question to ask is where does the "newmtl" tag in the .mtl file come from? I would like to design a part with Inventor, export via an .obj file, and then read this file into another application. It would be handy if I could give the various surfaces of the Inventor part a unique identifier; that is, tag each face or group of faces with a character string.
