How to create this geometry?

Hi guys,

Attached is an image of locking 'teeth' that I want to try and recreate, I have tried doing a profile with a 3D sketch to get the path but my attempts thus far have not been all the successful, could someone please assist me in this so that I may learn how to do this better going forward.

Thanks!

My attempt attached (Inventor 2019)

How would one do this in an ipt? Because the part I am doing is actually a casted part and not a sheet metal?

Great attempt though!

"Bend part" does work with the extruded part as well. Doesn't have to be a sheet metal plate. You can also use "Convert to part" and add other features.

What version of Inventor are you using?

Can you Attach the *.ipt file of what you have so far?

I am not too familiar with how that would work on the current piece that i am doing, attached is the part I want to make those 'teeth' on. Would you be able to show me how it is done on this piece?

Hi JD,

I am using IV2021,

attached is the part.

Hi guys,

Took some time but I found a result that I am happy with.

If anyone has a suggestion for a better workflow I would love to hear it.

(sorry, I cannot try it because I do not have a 2021 or a 2020.3 under my hands now)

From your picture it looks like a coil feature. Or maybe I've missed anything?

Hi there,

it is not a coil feature, it is a locking mechanism of sorts that prevents the part that sits on top of it from rotating in a certain direction using 'teeth'.

...sorry, I was in a hurry and I probably expressed myself wrongly.

I understood that it is a locking mechanism using those teeth to prevent release. My suggestion was to use the inventor coil feature to model that shape. I have done the same in this part (it's a special safety washer that I have authored in a content center), which also has some similar teeth preventing release (even if the real part is much more complicated). They were done with a coil feature, and they look very similar to the picture you have posted (again, maybe I misunderstood).

I hope it helps

Ahh, I see. Yes I actually ended up using the coil feature to get what I wanted, it worked perfectly!

...sorry, I have to correct myself once again. In this specific washer I have used a revolution (one can tell it from the shape of the short edge of the teeth), but for the shape of the teeth from your picture, the coil is better.

Agreed, could i see the part file where you used revolution by any chance?

Here it is.

I've used some math to keep it under control: I didn't want too many geometries but still a decent representation of the component.
