Are you trying to add the ACAD file to your Inventor drawing so they are linked or are you trying to add the contents of the ACAD file into your Inventor drawing?

Ok, then just go to the Manage tab and select below.

In your case, select "Create from File".  Then just browse for the ACAD file after selecting the "Object Type" "AutoCAD Drawing".

Thanks Scott.

I've given it a try to insert AutoCAD DWG and it comes up with an error saying 'Could not insert Object' after selecting the file and then clicking on Ok.

Graham,

Not sure if this makes a difference, but what versions are each?

What was the error message?  I just tried it and didn't get one.

You cannot have the AutoCAD drawing open when you try to insert it into the Inventor file.  Try closing the AutoCAD and re-insert it into the Inventor.

Hi! Here is what you might be looking for. Start a new Inventor part. Go to Create -> Import -> pick the AutoCAD dwg file -> pick an origin plane (XY) and the origin to place the geometry. The model space geometry will appear in Inventor. Save the part. Create a drawing view of the part and enable dwg geometry in the drawing. This is called DWG Underlay workflow.

Many thanks!

Hi,

Just thought I would share the solution to my issue of adding AutoCAD drawing to an existing Inventor Drawing.

First open existing Inventor drawing and add a blank sheet and then save it and close the drawing.

Then open that drawing in AutoCAD and then do the drawing in model space and then go to the your blank sheet and add a viewport of the drawing you did in model space to the blank sheet.  Save the drawing and close it.

Now open the drawing in Inventor and you will then have both Inventor and AutoCAD drawings on the same template.

Thanks for all your input and suggestions.
