How fast is your Inventor PC really?

Hi guys,

We have had to do some testing on a bunch of Inventor PC's recently to determine which of the PC's needs to be replaced. Obviously we needed to find out which of the PC's are the worst eprformers as there was only budget to replace 50% of the design PC's. So we thought the Darwin theory will come in handy right... 🙂

Anyways I started searching on the net for toppics on how to benchmark an Inventor PC. Then I thought whats the point of using gaming benchmark tools because Inventor is not a game and there are more aspects than just graphics performance when it comes to percieved performance on an Inventor PC right.

So we decided to create our own Inventor benchmark tool which tests various aspects of an Inventor PC to give us an overview of our PC's performance. This then helped us make a decision as to whcih pc's to replace.

We have made the tool available free of charge to anyone interested in checking how their PC stacks up to their peers or friends. 🙂

lols its not genuine, I've learned a lot whilst developing my own benchmark test and one of things is how easy it is to cheat, I need to learn these things to make sure this can't be done in my test. 

But yes although that's a proper score sheet, the result has been cheated.

I don't think Pieter ever expect his InventorBench test to become this popular but the fact it can be cheated (very easily) means the results can't be used commercially or in any marketing material, but he's aware of this, it'll be fixed in his V2 and the test I'm releasing.

Yeah, it's like you say, there are ways to fool the app so that the results are completely skewed but this benchmark tool was originally created to help companies find the weakest PC's in their design office and not really as a "competition" tool. Knowing what I know now there will be good security mechanisms in place in the new version to prevent fiddling...  😉

To be fair, I've only ever seen one result over this entire massive thread which I suspected was a cheat, and that was a couple of years back.  

But yea, I'm looking forward to seeing how you approached the new version and what tests are in there!

I just picked up this new laptop. Its an HP Omen. These gaming laptops have impressive specs, for cheap money's these days. This particular setup can be had on clearance for less than $1200. This particular Omen is the "older" 2019 chassis with the newer 2020 I7 processor.

Yes, that's a question we get a lot. The idea was to have it fin with the Inv 2021 launch but life has thrown too many curve balls at us in the last year or so. Anyways we are committed to getting something out in the next month or so. The pandemic is also not helping but hey, we will get there!

I systematically benchmark all our workstations before commissioning, using blender benchmark and this tool. Having a new release will be for sure an added value. Looking forward to test it.

Here is the result with the HP Z2 workstation with 9900K and 2080Ti.

Keep in mind this is done in Inventor 2019 (haven't upgraded yet.). the last version of inventor scores better.

 Possibly marginally, but not in your case there.  Something is bottlenecking the modeling test, that should finish around 6 seconds on a 9900K, going from 6 to 10 seconds has a dramatic impact on the final IPI score.

I'd also ask HP if your RAM is rated higher than 2667MHz (does it have a XMP profile you can enable).

The memory speed is correct. at least with the order confirmation. Intel doesn't give warranty on XMP so i think that HP also stays clear for their workstations.

I do think there is something bottlenecking, maybe it is the cooling? The rest of the results seem to be ok though. Could also be a C state issue with the motherboard or driver.

It's not my machine so i can't really test or optimize. But he'll be working with me this week so i can check the general setup

This whole XMP thing is completely BS and would never hold up in court if/when anyone ever takes them to court on it, obviously problem being who wants to take Intel to court. 

But you just can't create a marketable feature (XMP) which secretly voids a warranty of a major system component, and then advertise memory to run at speeds which only run at those speeds if XMP is enabled.  The whole thing is flaky AF, not sure about the US but in the UK/Europe that BS just doesn't fly over here, you can't advertise something which by default voids warranties without making that crystal clear. 

Either way, Dell are selling Workstations now with XMP enabled...

This is the Precision 7750 mobile workstation, every single one of these options is XMP as it's higher than the default DDR4 baseline frequency.

Hi guys,

Is there anything wrong with this build? this is a brand new system with a Ryzen 5 3400G for a friend but I am kind of disappointed by the score. My 7 year old i7 4770k can do better. Do you guys see any bottleneck? 

I admit this is the first time I build an AMD system. Is there anything in the BIOS I need to do to get the 4.2 Mhz max boost?

Hi @Mario-Villada,

The main thing that does ring alarm bells is the 27-sec drawing test which does use your CPU heavily. The fact you are on a 4 core would definitely be a bottleneck since drawing is one of the few multithreaded Inventor processes.

To get high turbo speeds above the base clock requires enough cooling and enough power - power is rarely an issue so cooling is a possibility yet it's a 4 core processor so shouldn't be excessively hot.

Did two Benchmarks with v2019 and v2021. Huge improvement between those years.

CPU not overclocked or anything. (but thinking about it on a daily basis 😅)

@Neil_Cross: Seems like you're doing a lot of comparisons and have a lot of knowledge about computers. Since my last researches, due to a new configurated and purchased workstation, I've learned a lot about computers and components myself.

Do you think or know if using 4 DIMMs, rather than 2, is better for performance? (like in my config)

Do you know what effect RAM timing (not the clock frequency, but the CAS Latency, tRCD, tRP & tRAS) has on the performance of Inventor? (Maybe you already did some testing in that direction)

BTW, is there some kind of spreadsheet, where everyone can share their configuration and results?
