I am trying to flatten just a bit of the sphere to place a cylinder underneath it like a ball joint so it is stronger than if the the cylinder is in the sphere

Hi! I guess this depends on how precise you want. If you start out from a Freeform sphere, any edit would possibly deviate the Freeform body from real sphere. In Freeform, to have better control, you will need to insert edges or sub-divide. You need to add more edges closer to the pole. Then either flatten the pole vertex and the surrounding vertices.

Or, you can start out from a real sphere and split a small portion of the sphere. Then convert the small spherical face to Freeform and flatten the face. I have attached an example created in 2017. Please take a look and let me know if it works for you.

Many thanks!
