How do I create a part based on surfaces of another part

I have a motor part that I wish to build a mount/container for. This involves cut-extruding a circle into it. To ensure fit, I have built the walls of the container based on surfaces I have created around the motor. When I cut-extrude, the problem is that it cuts into the motor. Is there a way do cut into the new part without affecting the old part, and in addition, to separate the new part completely when done so it isn't treated as part of an assembly with the old part?

There are several ways to do this. My favorite Copy Object.

Take a look at my screencast.

I would create a new part, derive the motor as composite surface model into it, then build the mount/container around it.  The right-most Derive style icon is the composite surfaces one.

This technique avoids creating an adaptive part in an assembly.
