Hopper volume

Can someone please tell me the easiest way to model a hopper with pyramid outlet. I would assume an extrusion, then loft, then shell...? Also is there a way I can ascertain its volume?

Thanks in advance.

There are several methods depending on your design intent and Inventor version. Far more information is needed, or this will turn into a game of twenty questions.

Sorry folks - the version is Inventor 2010. The hopper will be "farmed out" for fabrication so it does not require great detail - those guys know what they are doing. I am interested mainly in its volume and weight.

Regards.

Question # 2: Can you post what you have done so far?

Question # 3: What is the shape of the Hopper?

"Pyramid" is not very descriptive.

Question # 4: What are the Dimensions as a starting point?

Q6 is it sheet metal or molded plastic?

Q7 if sheet metal, how many sheets?

>model a hopper with pyramid outlet

Q8 Is the hopper also pyramid or just the outlet?

>I would assume an extrusion

Q9 An extrusion of what profile? A circle, a square, a rectangle?

Q10 Any taper angle on previously mentioned extrusion?

Q11 Are you using sheet metal tools for this?

Q12 Are you using multi-body solids for this?

I the attached similar of what you are looking for? As far as best
methods for a simple model it depends on wether you want to control the
angle of the discharge or the length. You could extrude the outlet and put
a taper angle on it but the it may not be as easy to control the opening
size. To get the volume of what I have drawn simply go into the physical
properties and get the current volume of the part. Then suppress the shell
and get the new volume of the part and subtract the 2 to get the internal
capacity of the hopper.
Like I said this is an extremely simple version and if you need any
details of the actul construction you may need to use some other methods.

I apologise for my vagueness. The hopper will be made from 2.5mm sheet, but I am going to let the hopper guys worry about sheets etc. The hopper is to be used for Garnet blasting abrasive. I have posted the hopper being used - I hope it can help.

Regards.

I would have built it around the origin planes rather than making all those new work planes, but that doesn't answer your questions.

Why cant you just move the EOP above the shell and Physical iProperties to get the volume?

2073866250.000 mm^3 (Relative Error = 0.000000%)

If you modeled to internal dimensions and shelled to the outside it would eliminate the small error, but I don't think it's significant (I don't have time right now to check it) (plus we'll be dealing with a pile of stuff dumped in so it will never be perfectly filled and level right at the top of the hopper).

I have to look now to see what else you wanted, back in a sec.

Your way of making it is pretty good (aside from the symmetry/workplane thing), here's another (I hope you've got 2010). I incorporated the shell "out" method I talked about.

2058021666.667 in^3 (Relative Error = 0.000000%)

so my volume suggestion was less than 0.02 m³ off.

Another way would be to make it surfaces and thicken, I don't use that so I'm not sure why I can't select faces so that I get panels with square edges, someone else will have to help us out with that.

Hi Paul.
By deriving the hopper into a new file and recreating the inner volume I got
2054.790 L^3.
Regards,
Igor.

Gents,

Thank you for your very informative replies. I used Corey's method and got 2054 litres as well. Good point about using origin work planes - that one has been rectified. Is there a way I can get them to be visible by default when creating a new part ? The hopper is going offshore so needed to be reasonably precise with payload.

Regards.

"Is there a way I can get them to be visible by default when creating a new part ?"

Open your template, turn on the visibility, save your template.

..but you are only going to have to turn them off later... well you should be turning them off. You know you don't have to see a work plane to use a work plane, just select it in the browser.

You could also have created the part using a lofted surface, then thicken the faces. Will give you better top and bottom edges.
