Hidden dialog on file Check-in (2020.2.2)

When I try to check-in a file from Inventor, it seems like Inventor is frozen.  It is not that it is non-responsive, it is that none of the other commands will work.  When I do an ALT+TAB to see all the open dialogs, I see this.

When I try to select this dialog, it will not let me. In order to clear this, I have to hit the "Windows" key and then it clears the dialog.  Its not supposed to work this way. Here is what I have done (in this order) to try and make this work correctly, but nothing has worked so far.

1. Rebooted workstation

2. Disabled ALL add-ins.

3. Repair install on both Inventor and Vault pro.

4. Rebooted computer.

5. Inventor reset utility.

6. Rebooted Computer.

I suspect that this dialog above is this "Properties out of date" dialog:

I have checked the Inventor prompts (Tools>app options), but cannot find this prompt there. Also checked the Vault pro "Options" for this prompt, but no luck there either. If I can suppress this dialog, I would.  I think that would solve my issue.

Any suggestions on how to solve this would be apprectiated.

P.S.  Here is a screencast of me trying to check in a file.

This morning I uninstalled Inventor and Vault Pro.  Reinstalled and still have the exact issue.

Uninstalled using the Autodesk Uninstall Tool.

When you reinstalled did you update to 2020.2.2 again?

The install was a deployment and yes it also put on the 2020.2 update.  I uninstalled the update afterwards, but the problem still persists.  The workstation was has two monitors.  I thought that might be the issue, so I disabled the secondary monitor, but that didn't help either.

I have noticed that when it hangs and I press ALT+TAB, the "Properties out of Date" window is shown.  If I select this, the dialog is not shown, but if I just click the "X" to close the dialog, then the file is almost immediately shown as checked-out in the vault browser.  I recorded a gif to show this.  see below.

I am the local admin on this workstation and the UAC has been turned off.  I have tried running Inventor "As Administrator", but still no luck.

Thanks,

Kirk

Hi Kirk,

The behavior does not look right for sure. A few things to check. Could a dialog hidden behind another window or in a different monitor? Make sure you install all critical Windows updates and update graphics driver. Also, install Vault 2020.2 update.

Many thanks! Stay safe!

Johnson,

Correct, its not right, but I can't figure out whats causing this. I have the latest nvidia video driver and at Vault 2020.2 and the issue still persists. Using nVidia GTX1050 (driver 445.75, released 3/23/2020).

Just for kicks, I removed the Vault 2020.2 update (Inventor is at 2020 RTM) just to see if it would change anything and it didnt.

Now Inventor is currently as 2020 and Vault is at 2020.2 and it still shows the issue, so I am going to say that it is not related to a point release.

Can you tell me what controls the display of the dialog below, because I have looked in Inventor App options, Prompts and its not listed there. Have also looked in the Vault prompts options and its not there either?  I went back to Inventor 2018 and not listed there either. Seems like I remember it in the app options at one time.

Hi Kirk,

Are you running additional Add-Ins other than the ones shipped with Inventor Pro? The prompt dialog shows an old Inventor icon, which is strange. It does not look like Inventor 2018 or later.

Many thanks!

Hi @karthur1 ,

Do you happen to use a remote desktop to a computer using dual monitor? It's worth checking if Vault dialog box was to be shown in a secondary monitor which was then disabled. As a result, Vault was forced to display the dialog box in a position that wasn't on screen and it caused the issue.

Working locally on this workstation.  I am running dual monitors now and have the issue.  I have even disabled one of the monitors via Windows and still have the issue. Not sure if there is a way to "reset" windows so that it relearns that it has two monitors.

By the way, this is the only dialog that I am having issues with.

It looks that the dialog is in the back of Inventor and located in another monitor. When using Alt+Tab key, can it return to the other monitor? If yes, please move it back to the primary monitor. It should work fine next time, although there is only monitor now. Sometimes we release one monitor, and the position of dialog is still in other monitor, and it is not reset. This should be an issue.

I had a similar issue (working form home on lock down here in New Zealand) 2 monitors in the office only 1 in the home office and i used the "alt" "spacebar" method to "relocate" a hidden / missing dialog.

To move a dialog using just the keyboard:
  1. Hold down the ALT key.
  1. Press SPACEBAR.
  2. Press M (Move).
  3. A 4-headed arrow will appear. When it does, use your arrow keys to move the outline of the window.
  4. When you are happy with its position, press ENTER.

Worked like a charm.

Hope this helps

That worked and I was able to select the stupid dialog.  Once it was finally selected, I selected "No to All" and "Don't ever Prompt again".  Dialog now does not appear when I check-in a file and everthing is as it should be.

@johnsonshiue

I found the dialog listed under Vault > Vault options, Prompts.

Darren - you're a life saver. Exactly the same issue in lock-down here in UK, your solution worked like a dream. Now, can you make my laptop screen bigger! 😉

Thanks again.

Were you able to find the dialog I posted about in message #12 above?  This should fix the issue with the "Hanging on file check-in" issue.

Yes I tried this, but I could not make it work.

Don’t know way it doesn't. Tried with different programs, but same result.

The only thing I managed to do is to snap different windows to right or left side of my screen.

I will have to do some moe testing when I am back at the office.
