Helical "Box Crop" a pointcloud

Is there a way to use a solid model, like a sweep based off a helix, as a "box crop" for removing points from a point cloud?
I have a helical hand rail that was LIDAR scanned with it sitting on top of the nosing of a stair. I want to separate the hand rail points into one part file, the stair into another, combine them in an assembly, and then design my posts and pickets between the two.
