Hatch By Material and default hatch angle help

Hi, I'm working with inventor 2021. I have a couple of custom materials hatches that I would like to apply across already made drawings. I have the materials set up in my styles editor, but in order to apply these hatches I need to right click > edit > check the box marked "Hatch by material" on every single instance of hatching on my sheet. I'm working with vault and don't have the necessary permissions to edit or save to the style library, but I only have a couple of presets I want to apply. Is there any setting that will automatically check "hatch by material" for all of my views?

Additionally, I want the default hatch angles to be only 45° and 135°. I've found where to change those in styles editor > preset values > section hatch angle, but the changes don't apply. in the help documentation, it says "Note: The default hatch rotation angles apply on creating section views. If the default setting changes, existing section views keep the hatch rotation angle as a property override." Is there any way to prevent this? delete the overrides? force the section to recalculate and use the new defaults?

Thank you.

Hi! Based on your description, the hatch angle should just work as you have attempted. Please share an example that illustrates the problem. I would like to understand the behavior better.

Many thanks!

Hi! I can't attach any of the files I'm working on, but I can provide some screen shots and some more detailed information.

1.png

 1. Open up the style manager with none of the custom hatches applied.

2.PNG

2. Click "from file", navigate to a .iam that has all the materials I want (side note, why are .ipts the only available extensions in the "file of type" dropdown here? I have to copy and paste the name of the file I want from outside of the program. iams load, but aren't findable from this popout for me).

3.PNG

3. Apply the custom hatches.

4.PNG

4. Remove all unwanted section angles, add 45 and 135. Save and close.

5.PNG

 5. I didn't change the default pattern, so nothing has changed. All of these sections have an assigned material in the model, however.

6.PNG

 6. Ideally, having added custom hatches associated with materials would have ticked the box for "by material", and removing/adding new default hatch angles would recalculate the hatches across the drawing instead of saving all of the previous angles as overrides.

7.PNG

7. Checking the box and manually changing the angle works, but it isn't an ideal solution. I often have over 50 cross section areas of different materials on a page, and right click > edit > tick box > highlight angle > type 45 or 135 > hit enter is way too cumbersome across dozens of sheets, all of which are different files so they can be vaulted and worked on separately. Am I missing some options somewhere?

Thank you again.

Hi! Many thanks for sharing the files! I think you have followed the steps to set up the material hatch in the drawing. One thing I would do differently is to set up the material hatch in the template and save it to the Styles Library. Then the material hatch will be applied to newly created section views accordingly ("By Material" checkbox will be checked by default).

Regarding why only ipt (and Material Library) can be selected is because only an ipt file contains material styles. An assembly file does not have the concept of material style except weld beads.

Thanks again!

Thank you for the reply! Unfortunately, I'm working with vault and don't have the necessary permissions to edit or save to the style library. Additionally, this does not address my initial problem, which is that I need to right click every single cross section in a drawing and manually enter the hatch angle and tick the box for Hatch by Material after setting up material hatches. With upwards of 50 different hatched areas on a page, across 20 different pages, this is fairly annoying. Is there a way around this?

Hi! I guess the material hatches were created after the section views. As a result, the section view hatch needs to be edited manually.

It is possible I don't fully understand the issue. Please try creating section views after the material hatches are set up. I don't think you need to manually change each hatch region.

Many thanks!

Yes, that is the issue, I want to apply these hatches and hatch angles dozens of sections that have already been made, to make them consistent with the rest of our drawings. I would strongly prefer not to have to remake all of the section views, as this would involve redoing a considerable amount of work with weld symbols, detail callouts, dimensions, and other notes. Is there no way to, like, click a button to update all sections on a page to the current style settings? Some sort of "rebuild all", but for drawings? If not, then do you think there is an ilogic solution to this problem?

Hi Patrick,

iLogic may work but it may need some custom rules. Please feel free to post the question on Inventor Programming forum (https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-programming-ilogic/bd-p/120).

Many thanks!

But otherwise, no, there is no solution to this issue, correct?

I have had this issue also. when styles has set hatch pattern (just one) the the drawing views don't follow this style.  The hatch angle is random, why is this.

Also, I can't control the material library (same issue as patrick). I would like to see a properties match for hatch on the drawing and have the hatch settings from the styles shown as a pull down menu (just like a layer). Because, If i make a section with 10 parts, each part has to be edited. Hatch Match Properties would be good for this.

i am able to create multiple hatch patterns in the Styles. then i can use the (annotate) / format pull down menu to select the hatch pattern that would best fit.

the only disadvantage is, I will need a lot of hatch patterns to compensate for scaling.

A match hatch pattern would be nice.
