GHOST LINE IN IDW

Looking for any ideas as to why the 2 lines shown circled in SECTION A-A bleed through into the view. These should be 2 short lines (1 top and bottom) to show the end of the thread, not a full line across. I can RMB on the 2 lines and turn Visibility off but this removes the entire line leaving nothing for the thread end which looks worse than leaving the 2 lines visible. I don't have Hidden Lines shown in the view but do have Thread Feature turned on.

I'll add a short workflow of the model shown as it may give a clue to the problem :-

  • As external threads are not available in the assy envirnoment I have opened anad saved a Content Centre (CC) member that represents the material to make the part from and then derived that CC member into a part file and performed all of the editing there,
  • I place both the CC part and the derived/edited part in the drawing. This is so I can create a PARTS LIST of the CC member, basically fudging the part file as if it were an assembly,
  • I then suppress the view of the CC member (could just drag it off the sheet but i don't like floating stuff-personal preference).

Nothing too strange there hey? I suspect the use of the CC member and/or the derive couped with a thread is causing the problem.

Hello @bhenderson

Thanks for your post.

Please create a pack and go of the dataset and attach it on your next reply: To Use Pack and Go to Package Files

Thanks

Thanks Sergio.

I use Pack-N-Go a lot to bring historical non-vaulted data into vault. If no ideas are put forward I will definitely do that.

I guess I am confused on what you are trying to achieve. Is there a reason for not cutting the threads at the part level? Maybe a better explanation of what you are trying to achieve to see if there is a better workflow?

BOM is very important where I work. We export the BOM (via custom code) to populate an Excel file that is then used for purchasing materials and parts.

Usual procedure is to place a Content Centre (CC) member into an assy and edit there. This gives us the BOM for the IDW and Excel with full CC member data including mass, and on the drawing I get the mass of the machined part and can see (and if I want use) the mass difference for machining calculations for cost and scrap.

However as there is no external thread in Inventor (this badly needs to be fixed) this approach can't be used. So instead we save the CC member and then derive that member into a part file where we can model as required including external threads. We then place the CC member into the IDW and the derived part file into the IDW and place the Parts List using the CC member as the source. This gives the correct CC data and the raw material mass while the drawing mass reports the derived part file mass.

The OP is asking about the 2 lines that shouldn't bleed through to this drawing level and I'm just thinking it may be the above workflow that is causing it.

Hi Brendan,

I am sorry if I misunderstood the issue. You are talking about the hidden lines showing the end of the thread on the section view, right? It seems correct to me. The hidden lines show the depth of the thread in the back. Could you elaborate what exactly the problem is?

Many thanks!

Wouldn't those lines disappear if you turned off hidden detail in that view?

Hidden lines are not shown. If hidden was on there would be lines for the revolved cuts.

Maybe these 2 lines just stand out too much for my liking 🙂

I did a test of putting a bolt with partial length thread into an IDW and sectioning it. That also results in the hidden line being shown to represent the end of thread.
