Get wires to export to correct plane

nick3ER9E

When i import a STP file into inventor 2019 i can select to add "wires" to the part. (or make them visible when opening)

The problem is that when i make a flatpattern it disapears from the product.

I know i can export the file to dwg but then it is on the wrong side.

When i open it in Autocad 2019 i can flip the product to the correct side.

But when i open it in the engrave software i only see the side of the product. (i think it is top view)

Hi @nick3ER9E ,

I'm not sure to understand exactly what you want to do but wires are not "physical" objects, so it's completely normal.

If you want to keep your text you'll have to engrave it on your part, to do that you'll have to project the wire in a sketch.

After that you'll be able to see your text in a flatpattern.

Please have a look here :

Hey Fabian,

This is a way to do it yes. But is there an other way to get the tekst into a dwg or dxf?

If i have the part as is and export it to dwg in inventor, i get the wrong face view in my laserprogram.

If i open it there i look at the side of the product. (thickness 1mm)

But i want to see the front of the part.

Hope you understand what i need, but it is a bit difficult to explane.

Hi Nick,

I guess the following two conditions fit you. 1) You are on earlier 2019 builds (before 2019.4). 2) The sheet metal part body thickness is different than the sheet metal thickness setting.

Please install 2019.4 update followed by 2019.4.3 update. It should fix the problem. The flat pattern should always be front-facing.

Many thanks!

@johnsonshiue

No it is not about the flat pattern, but just the model as is to export it to DWG. (see earlier added dwg image)

Somehow i need to change the front of the part in inventor to get the correct view in my laser program.

In autocad i can flip the product because it is in 3D. But my laserprogram doesn't accept that and only shows me the side of the part.

Hi @nick3ER9E ,

I get it now !

So you've got several way to export a face in DXF or DWG.

Easiest first : Right clic on the face and "Export face" BUT you won't get the inside of letters as you can see...

1.PNG

Workaround :

Make an IDW, front face view and export to DWG (be sure to export in AutoCAD DWG and not Inventor DWG).

I think your laser software is looking from the Z axis so you could also rotate the part so it face the z axis, you can use "Move bodies" command with rotate option to do that.

2.PNG3.PNG

Please keep me update !

@Fabian_perree,

The IDW function doesn't work, Well it does make an IDW but it doesn't show the tekst.

Im also unable to emboss the tekst. For some reason i can not select it to do anything with it.

As far as i can see in you're video i got a but of a different menu on the left side.

For the tekst it say's "Repaired geometry. What i can do is select every line, but nog all in 1 go.

Sorry I was talking about your IPT file. I don't understand why you don't have wires as you should.

Anyway you'll find enclosed the dwg files.

Why are you making Flat Pattern - the part is already flat?

I am guessing that the real issue is that you merely want to change the Z axis up.

@JDMather,

I indeed dont need to make it a flatpattern as long as i can export the right surface.

If i get the outcome @Fabian_perree mentioned above with the IDW. it is perfect.

But i dont get it to work on my PC.

@nick3ER9E , you may update your software with the last hotfix

( 2019.4.4

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/fr/support/inventor-products/learn-explore/caas/downloads/downloads/F...)

but I don't see in the release note anything about importing STEP.

For me you should have the wires and it's more of a software problem so you could ask to support.

I've tried to reproduce the issue with Inventor 2019.4.3 but couldn't.

But maybe someone else here will see something I didn't...

@Fabian_perree,

I just updated to the new relaese but i get the same outcome.

What i see is that you have the wires called "Contruction" in your model browser.

In mine it says "repaired geometry". I think it is a setting for import but dont know where to look.
