Gear generation from a rack

Hello everyone

I want to create specialised gear profiles, which cannot be done with Inventor's spur gear generator.

 

I want to draw/model the generating rack, and then use this in Inventor to generate a tooth. So effectively, this would be virtual hobbing.

 

It is possible with another well-known software - please watch the first 2 minutes of this video (sorry it's in French):

Am I right in thinking that this is not possible with Inventor?

So I was looking at this with iLogic, and had it 1/2 way there, but then crashed when I tried to trade out the copy object solid, for one I created. Smiley Frustrated

 

I'll try again here in a bit, but might have to ask some questions once I get back into it.

@WHolzwarth Where do you get the number for the pattern of the rack (Circular Pattern 1), it's set at 11 in your files?

Hi Curtis,

I'm glad to see you jumping in, too.

11 instances are needed because a non 360° pattern counts the first and last instance separately.

60° steps needs 4 instances for 180° total, 30° steps needs 7 instances for 180° total, and so on.

 

I'm pretty sure, that you will finish this task.

sorry for the noob question. But, how to copy the whole rack 3d model to the gear blank file? i tried using "copy object", but there were no paste options...

Hello there

 

You need to open a new assembly (.iam) file. Place the wheel blank, and then the rack, into this assembly. Double click on the wheel blank to edit it within the assembly. Then use copy object. In the Copy Object dialogue box, at the top you have checked "body". Then select the rack. In the bottom (Output) part of the box, check "create new" and select "solid". Hit ok. Then open the wheel blank from the assembly and you will see that the rack is now part of the wheel blank .ipt. Save the wheel blank, and discard the .iam which you used for the copy object operation.
