Freeform Bridge issue: Twists and intersections

Freeform Bridge issue: Twists and intersections

Hey guys! I'm using the freeform tools to make an organic shape like a frog foot, so I set up 4 freeform spheres and was planning on bridging them to make the webbing and bones between each of the toes. When I use the bridge function, however, I get some funky results where the bridge either doesn't align properly or completely intersects itself. Any ideas on what the deal is?

Hi! Based on my experience, this can happen when the two loops are either far apart or have different number of edges. Or, their orientations are drastically different. Please feel free to attach the file here so forum experts can take a further look.

Many thanks!

So update on the issue, what Johnson suggested was that I try "toggle smooth" and do the command again. This did not work, so it may be an issue related to selection, I think. There are two ways I am selecting faces: the first for the main central toe of the foot shape, the other for the outer toes. Here's how it looks:

Main model, no bridging:

Large central toe, 4 faces on each sphere:

Opposing side toes, 2 faces on each "corner" of the sphere:

Any suggestions?

Hi protostripes –

I had some luck with this.  Here are some suggestions to get a good result.

#1 As Johnson suggested equal # of faces on either side of the bridge is more reliable.  To get to this used Subdivide on the “foot” end so that that each bridge was connecting four “foot” faces to four “toe” faces.

#2 I used Edit Form to rotate each toe sphere so there were four faces well aligned with faces on the foot.

#3 The Bridge preview includes a start vertex (highlighted green) and direction arrow (red).  For one of my bridges the default start vertices did not align on the foot and toe sides.  You can select another vertex to change the start.

Here’s what I ended up with…

Hope that helps!

And here is a screencast video showing the workflow:  https://autode.sk/2slxyNW

This does not show it, but in the bridge command if the red direction arrows are pointing opposite ways you can flip the "Side 1" or "Side 2" direction in the dialog.
