Flat Pattern of Rolled Steel

I have a large ring with a hole in it. I would like to make a flat pattern of this piece. However when I convert it to sheet metal and get a flat pattern, the hole is still a perfect circle. It should realistically be elliptical in shape when flat if it is a true circle when it is rolled.

What are the steps to get this to properly bend the circular cut out.

Are you certain it is a perfect hole, if you look at the part from the edge view, does the hole slope at all?

To make the hole appear circular, the circle could of been "wrapped to face" to account for the roll in a 3d sketch.

Are you making the part to get a flat, or was this part sent to you?

Just a thought.

I made the original part, The hole was simply cut from an extrusion and not wrapped to the face. I have since attached to ipt file for reference.

Project the "circle" in the Flat Pattern.

Attempt to dimension the "circle".

A hole that small cutting through a cylinder that large is only going to be slightly out of round in the flat pattern.

Have to really zoom in to see the difference.

Also, your part is modeled incorrectly for a Sheet Metal part.

May I ask why not use the sheet metal environment from the beginning? You could unroll the part, place the hole and then roll back up. Or if your one of those that prefers to draw circles instead of using the hole command, then you could of used the "cut normal" command, this will make sure you features are cut perpendicular to the sheet.

Hi! The hole isn't circular in the flat pattern body. You can try creating a workaxis. It will not work. In drawing, Inventor may try to approximate it as a circle so that radial dimension can be added. But, it is not a true circle.

Thanks for the input everyone! I am struggling now to figure out a way measure the horizontal and vertical axis of the now created ellipse.  Suggestions?

Hi! I suspect you will need to use 3D sketch -> Include or 2D Sketch -> Project.
