Files pinned to taskbar behave differently

I use the "pin to taskbar" function in windows for files that are commonly opened.  I do this by dragging a file in explorer onto the application's icon.  Then when I right-click on the app icon, the pinned shortcuts appear there at the top with the recent files below them.

The problem is, the two .idw files I have pinned behave differently--one ("TEMPLATES") opens in the current Inventor instance (good) and the other ("Karl Templates") starts up a new instance (bad).  Also, the icons are different.  Any other .idw files I pin behave like the second.  I'm afraid to unpin the one good shortcut lest I lose it's ability to open in the same instance.

Hopefully this makes sense.  This started with 2019.  Here's screen cap--note my task bar is located on the right side of the screen...

May I ask why you would pin a template?  Are you changing the template that many times that you need quick access to it?   Or are you using that to start a drawing from and saving it as something else?  If so there's no need to do that..    Set up your templates and Inventor settings and start a new drawing from it.

In addition if a secondary instances is started you need to run the Inventor Reset Utility to correct the issue.

Sorry for the delayed response.

Our templates.idw contains 50 drawings templates for different types of parts/assys that would be too cumbersome to use as templates in our project.  It's also a repository of notes, tables, symbols, etc that we regularly copy from which why it's handy to access via the task bar which is always visible.

I ran the reset utility which didn't change anything.  I unpinned and re-pinned the templates.idw and out of curiosity and now it, too, opens in a new instance.  Ugh.

This started with Inventor 2019 so I don't think it's merely a Windows issue.

Hi thanks for your quick reply ivd already saw this post and try the solution wich didnt work for me but im a little scared to modifiy the regfile from windows !!

(important notice: when im in windows explorer and i double click on the same exact file that ivd just pinned into the taskbar it open's correctly onto the same instance, the problem occurs only when i open the file from the pinned shortcut, tried to delete the pinned shortcut and remade it, with the same exact result)

from now i tried everything i could figure without success

thats why i was asking this in the forum !

thank you anyway for your help, any help is appreciated

Thanks for chiming in, aken_nsk.  7 months later and a few major updates later and I still have the same problem, even with files from the 'Recent' list.

I've since pinned the files I regularly use to the Inventor Home tab and access them through there, but I do miss not having to change tabs and instead having them in the taskbar.

FWIW... Mine works just fine... Pinned files open in the same instance.

I'm running 2019.. So this is very likely related to Windows/Inventor profile and not a bug with Inventor itself..

And don't be afraid to do the registry setting.. Its quite easy and won't cause any problems..

Yep i just figured out to modify the reg file in windows but this didnt help me at all neither

I think the problem we have here are related to the pinned file not the explorer opening ...for example when i open a file in the explorer it did open correctly in the same instance... but then as soon as i try to reopen that same exact file from the recently used shortcut its opens up a new instance... very annoying

I ended giving up on it, hoping that the new install of inventor 2020 will solve the problem, were about to do the switch soon so, but i did found a workaround that is not the best but its working "OK" for me, and i think its less annoying than switching to the inventor home tab each time, what im doing right now is right click on the icon to make my pinned shortcut open than instead of clicking on the one i want to open, im dragging it right on top of my inventor instance on in the top of the window right were its written Autodesk Inventor Professional 2019, this make the drawing open in the same instance

hope it can help you like it did for me,

thanks !

Thanks for the workaround.  Have you gotten 2020 installed yet?  We recently did and I just pinned a file like before and it works as intended once again!
