Feature in Student Edition

Does anyone know if the design accelerator function works in the student version? IF it does could you explain how? ?None of the icon respond when I hit them, yet none are grayed out.

Yes it does work. There is no functional difference other than edu banner.
Can you attach a screen capture?

I tried to use the procedure in the help tutorials, I am new to inventor but have used ProE and Solidworks before. Do I need to create a base part and then make it a gear? When I exit the costumize window the boxes become grayed. My next question would be are there any books and online tutorials which will shown me how to use this and similar functions?

The attachment has two pics, one with costumize box open the other with it closed. Thank you for your help!

You need to be in an assembly file (*.iam) to use the Design Accelerators.
Also, as a beginner you should not need to load any toolbars. The toolbars you need will be available in the correct environment when you need them. Go to the drop down in the Assembly Panel Bar.

I was going through some how to's a saw that toolbar. It is similar to a sub-program that Solidworks uses and it caught my eye. I draw a lot of gears for school and that would make my life easier. I have not tried an assembly yet in Inventor so that would explain why it didn't work. Thanks for the help.

You might want to go through the MA 105 document on this site.

http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/content/DSG322/inventor_surface_tutorials.htm

also,
http://www.mcadforums.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8698

and,
I assume you know about http://engineersrule.org there is a complete curriculum on that site. I'm not sure what is available to students as compared to that available to faculty. Ask your professor to download the pdf curriculum and sample files if you can't find them.

and finally,
Go through the Help>Tutorials, there are a couple on Design Accelerators that would have indicated to you to start with an Assembly file. (Save the file before starting one of the Design Accelerators.)

SolidWorks requires extensive customization of the toolbars or use of the pull-down menus. In Inventor this is not really necessary and as you have found can result in tools in the wrong environment.

Possibly...

The Spur Gear Generator is a gearing design tool. It will simplify the
engineering calculations associated with gear trains and it will provide a
solid representation of the resulting gears.

The resulting gear models will not have accurate involute tooth profiles -
the assumption is that you are purchasing the gears and that this simplified
representation is adequate.
