Fatal Realdwg Error !!dbobji.cpp@8501: eNotOpenForWrite, fatal error during save

Inventor 2019 Crash issue

I have a significant crash issue with a very complicated .dwg file that is associated with a very complex assembly that automatically builds itself. There is a lot of rules in both the .dwg and .iam files, but i have been using these through both the 2017 and 2018 iterations without any problems. Now with 2019 every time I make changes to the .dwg file and attempt to save it the whole program crashes and I get an error message. I have included it here as a screen capture.

Have you confirmed you have enough free disk where ever this file is being saved?  Have you cleaned out your personal temp (%temp) folder?   Are you seeing the Inventor standard crash report (and sent at least one in) or does Inventor just close with no crash report dialog?   Have you checked the old version folder to ensure the last backup of this drawing is not corrupted?

I have confirmed free disk space, I have cleaned out my %temp folder, I have opened all the old versions and they work just fine, still can't save any of them.

The program crash is so sudden that there is no crash report dialog box and therefore no report is being sent.

Have you reviewed your Windows Event log to see if there are any errors or warnings around the time the crash occurs?

Hi! I had seen this kind of instability right before my harddrive died last year. The error message looks like Windows related. For some reason, OS cannot write the file back to memory or harddrive.

Many thanks!

I just spent a bunch of time creating every report i can, I don't see anything that correlates to the crashes. And now for some strange reason I can't even open the dwg file anymore. Every time I open it now it crashes before it even finishes to open and load and run through all of its opening sequences/code. To me this makes no sense.

The problem is that this is happening on two separate computers that have the same copy of the database, and this only started happening when I updated to Inventor 2019. Thanks for the reply either way!

Would it be possible to get a copy of the data set and the steps to reproduce the error?  If so we can do some testing on our end to see if it is reproducible and if so make an attempt to fix it.

I have uploaded the folder that contains the project and affected file to my google drive.

When you open the folder you can see the appropriate project file required to run the drawing I'm sending you. Once you load that project file you will need to open the main DWG that causes the problem, it is within the Workspaces/Workspace folder and its called MINI-OUTLINE ASSY DISPLAY TEMPLATE.dwg, if you open that drawing it will automatically run through a whole bunch of code and attempt to open TANK ASSY-OUTLINE.iam from the same folder. On my end this causes the program to crash 90% of the time. The only variation is if I attempt to open the TANK ASSY-OUTLINE.iam first and then the MINI-OUTLINE ASSY DISPLAY TEMPLATE.dwg afterwards then everything opens and works exactly how its supposed to, unless I attempt to make alterations to the dwg file and then attempt to save it. Upon doing so I get a crash so violent it does not even offer me the report function in inventor and I get a different warning which is what the screen shot included at the beginning of this post is showing.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Just a heads up that i have been using this exact drawing for about a year in Inventor 2017 without any issues. So i believe its a problem endemic to Inventor 2019, which is what I am currently using.

Here is the link to the folder you will need to open the file.

Hello Chris,

The problem was identified and ticket INVGEN-16613 was open to track it down.

Please stay tuned.

Thanks!

Do you have any news regarding your ticket? What was the issue?

I have the same error and cannot open the Inv drawing. It's about drawing as it does the same on multiple computers.

Thank you

radu

Hi Radu,

I checked the defect status. It has been investigated but there is no conclusion so far. A fix has not yet been made. There seem to be multiple issues with the files. One thing you may want to make sure is the dwg file compatibility. The dwg file was saved in AutoCAD 2013 format. In order to save the file properly, you will need to set Inventor DWG version to AutoCAD 2013 (Tools -> Application Options -> Drawing -> Inventor DWG Version).

I tried the files you sent to Xun. If I set the Inventor DWG Version to AutoCAD 2013, I don't get the save error. Could you try it?

Many thanks!

Actually I'm not working with Xun; I'm at a different company but got the same error message on a Inventor drawing.

I researched it and because we use Vault I was able to get a previous version of drawing and open it. The issue was coming from the ipt file that drawing was based on it. As soon as I get a previous version of ipt then drawing opens fine.

Thank you for your response.

Hi Rado,

The workaround more like set the application setting to proper DWG version which mentioned by Johnson in previous thread.

Hope it helps!

Hey guys I'm still getting the same error message, I have tried to change to Autocad2013 version and nothing changed at all, for me I think its the dwg file not the ipt, but unfortunately I don't have a backup of that file in a previous version that I could revert to. When I updated to Inventor 2019 I migrated all of my files so I cant roll back this drawing, and we constantly update our backups about once a week, and when I had discovered the problem it was already several weeks after the upgrade. (Lesson learned really, I will be keeping a dedicated backup every time I switch versions from now on). So in conclusion I am at the mercy of Autodesk discovering a fix to these files, otherwise It will probably take me a month to rebuild what I have thus far, so I would appreciate any updates as soon as you guys have them, thank you!

Hi Chris,

Did you send in crash reports recently? If yes, please send me an email (johnson.shiue@autodesk.com). I would like to take a look at the report and understand the crash better.

Many thanks!

No I have not because nothing has changed on my end but I have already uploaded the defected file along with a description in this post, just check my earlier comment where I share a link to my google drive with the relevant file.

Also there has been a ticket (INVGEN-16613) opened up already which I'm assuming means that you guys are working on the issue still.

I have a customer that is having this issue in 2018:

Error.png

They are currently using shrinkwrapped models referenced using AnyCAD (originally step files from PDMS). Can any one related to using this technique? Or is this more to do with the drawing itself maybe?

Seems nasty.

Hi! The error seems to be related to DWG True View. Have you uninstall and reinstall the latest DWG True View?

Many thanks!
