Extrusion solid/surface defaults?

Is there a way to set the default settings for an extrusion?  It seems to be constantly changing on me depending on what I have visible in my part file.  I used to think that if I only had sketches with open profiles visible, it would default to a surface extrusion, but I must've been wrong because now even when only one sketch with open profiles is visible it is defaulting to a solid which is impossible given the sketch that is visible.  Also, is there anyway to determine the extents the extrusion defaults to?  Usually, mine would be distance, but in the current situation it is defaulting to To Next.

Just realized with the sketche I have visible I am somehow able to extrude a solid, though in a very weird way, regardless is there anyway to change what the settings default to?

Nope... Defaults at this time are hard coded in the program and not user selectable..

Typically the selection will cause it to switch between solid and surface automatically..

Usually it will select surface for me at the start if no solids can be extruded, but currently with the skeleton surfaces I'm trying to build it somehow considers a single 2" line (indicated by red arrow) capable of building a solid like this (no other solids are visible or even shaped like this in my model).

When I select a line incapable of making a solid from the same sketch without switching the extrusion to surface first I get this message:

Hi! The default is always pointed to positive sketch normal, which is determined by the workplane or the planar face the sketch is based from. If the sketch is based on a workplane. You can right-click on the workplane to flip normal and the sketch will be flipped accordingly. So will the default Extrude direction.

Many thanks!

I guess a better question to ask in this scenario is how exactly are the limits for solid extrusions using open profiles determined?  When I click the single straight line segment as the profile, as shown in the picture above, it shows I'm able to extrude a solid based on other limits that are much much bigger than the 2" line segment.  I kinda get why it defaults to solid if it is possible to make one, but what other information in a part can it be using to make a solid in the first place?  I can't share my model, but I'm just wandering what type features the limits could be based off of.
