Exporting presentation file (IPN) as vectored artwork confusion

Exporting presentation file (IPN) as vectored artwork confusion

It seems to be endless confusion trying to export a 3D "exploded" view from a presentation file (IPN) to a vectored format that can be edited in other programs. I've seen so many other threads trying to say you can. But the reality is it doesn't. I hope I'm wrong. Why this type of request and/or question can't be more clearly answered is really frustrating.

EXAMPLE

1. You take an engineers 3D model (as an IAM file) and import it into a presentation file (IPN).

2. Then you edit the IPN file as needed for exploded parts/assembly views.

3. Now the Million dollar question: How do you get that IPN file exported as a vectored art file for use in another art program such as Illustrator.

Observation: The PDF export option results in a bitmapped PDF. And any other type of save as, save copy results in the base IAM file being exported as a default front-on view without any of the changes within the IPN file.

Please, can anyone be more clear on what can or can not be done?

Can you create a drawing and export the DWG as vectors?

@Anonymous,

Try to create a drawing and place the view you want, export to PDF file and use Illustrator to open this PDF directly since the PDF is vectorgraph indeed and the one of native formats for Illustrator.

Hope it helps!

I'm sorry, this again does not solve the issue. In a "normal" documentation workflow you leverage your engineer's hard work and use the constructed dwg (3D) files. Not create more work. Simply use what has already been created. Leverage work already done. You then take that file and pull it into presenter and edit it as needed for end user type documentation. It just so happens presenter makes creating "exploded" views very easy and precise. Once you have that revision complete, you export it into a "flat" vectored file. A snapshot. Once you have that, you then can import it into an "Illustrator-type" application to make it fit for "human" consumption. In other words, make it look pretty.

This is a fairly standard documentation/illustration process. Leverage materials already created and make it work for your purpose. Why create something from scratch? I'm not trying to downplay all the suggestions, but it does not seem to be a straightforward way to capture the 3D file into a flat snapshot vectored file. An acrobat vectored file would be fine. I've seen it work for a variety of other apps, but, for the life of me I can't seem to get the same from the presenter file.

You may be hitting a limitation of Inventor.  It may not be possible to get a vector pdf or other file directly from the IPN file.

The workaround appears to be placing the IPN file in an IDW/DRG file with Inventor and exporting from that drawing file.  There seems to be more export options from that type of file.

Have you tested the suggested workflow?

Hi! Another option is to export the ipn to dwf and view it in Autodesk Design Review (free).

Many thanks!
