So I've been trying to install Inventor Profession 2017 on my new computer, but the installation process aborts as soon as it gets to the material library. Also, the visual C++ installation is failing. The respective error codes are 1603 and 1619. Help!

Welcome to the community..
YOur installation may be failing for another reason without seeing the actual installation log file but I will assume its the normal and its failing on download due to the method you are using.
Download and install per:
1. Access the Autodesk Virtual Agent (link is in my signature) and follow the download links to your product.
2. Download all of the parts (some applications only have a single part to download) for your product first. Do not continue until all of the parts have fully downloaded.
3. Navigate to your download folder location and extract (double click) part _001_00X.sfx.exe (or the single file download).
4. In a few seconds the extraction will start and prompt you to extract to C:\Autodesk.
5. Once the extraction is finished, the installation will automatically start.
6. Follow the installation steps for your product
If you want the full recommended installation steps, click on the installation link in my signature.
Good luck on your installation.

This method is showing Inventor 2017. I was trying to reinstall a student copy of Inventor Professional 2017. I'm assuming there's a difference. Will this method still help, or should I post a copy of the installation log?
"This method is showing Inventor 2017" What method? I never showed any method. Post the installation log file if you want to but make sure it doesn't include any personal information such as your serial #. In addition there's no longer Inventor 2017 only Inventor Professional 2017 unless you are getting Inventor through Product or Factory Design Suite.

Sorry, should have been more clear. By "method," I meant the Virtual Agent. What I'm asking now is that, if I use the process of downloading these files through the Virtual Agent, will I be able to use my license for the student download of Inventor?
Virtual agent is just the place where to get your software from. Student or free license are the same as commercial (purchased) license. So it doesn't matter where you get the software from. But the Virtual Agent is the best way in downloading and installing your Autodesk software.

At this point you are only downloading files. You have not done any installation at this point. Next step is to extract them but like I said make sure all the parts are downloaded first. Then once the extraction is completed the installation will take place.
