emboss part number in part for laser etching

I create parts from a solid body part and I want to emboss the part number in some those parts for identification.  I have run into a couple of problems.

1. how to capture the part information in the text - part iproperties are grayed out.

2. set the default text properties in a part.

3. is there a way to create a punch or iFeature using text

thanks for your help.

You can create a text user parameter that links to your iProperties and create an embossment off of that text parameter.

That's what I would do... if I am fully understanding your goal that is.

See my attached file for reference. Open the parameters menu and update the text user param and then embossment will update.

Thanks for the quick response. That is close to what I am trying to do, but do you know of a way to link iProperties to as custom user parameter?  You see, I am going to be reusing this assembly over and over and I want the part numbers to update as I rename the parts.

So long as you know for sure which iproperty you want to link to the user parameter, sure.

I actually went ahead and did that to the part I sent you earlier after I sent it just to make sure what I thought would work, would in fact work.

You have to use iLogic. If there's another way to do it, it's not one I'm aware of. But it's super easy. Do you know how to use iLogic?

My updated part is attached. The iProperty you would change is iProperties>Project>Part Number

that will work although the event trigger is not updating the part after I change the part number.  I acutally have to run the rule to get the part to update but I can live with that.  Thanks for your help.

I'm surprised. I'm pretty sure mine would update when I applied the change to the iProperty. You're using the event trigger "iProperty Change" right?

Yes, but that is okay. I can figure that out later. I assumed that I was going to have to use iLogic but, I was hoping that it would be easier than that. I’m not sure why you can’t access the iproperty fields from within the text tool when you are editing a part like you can when you are in a drawing.

Best Regards,

Brad

Maybe this should go to IdeaStation.
