Editing a part in an assembly to change part.

I am trying to figure out a better way of doing this. I have a stand for a pump that I am trying to bolt to a frame U-channel. I have the pump lined up and in place, then I want to create a sketch on the frame U-channel and project the holes from the pump stand to the frame so that the holes are in the right spot and the right size. When I extrude to cut the holes in the assembly, they are in the part, but when I try to open the part the holes are not saved. I need to be able to open the part and get a flat pattern out of it so the part itself can be made. I can crate the sketch in the assembly, save the sketch itself, open the part, then import the sketch and constrain it to the part. It all lines up but it is time consuming and creates more files that I am trying to cut down on. Is there a better or easier way to do this. Please let me know. Thank you for your time, help, and answers.

Hello @Anonymous

In the Assembly you need to double click on the part you want to place the holes in. Or select the part, right click and edit. Then create your sketch, and extrude.

Then the holes will appear in the part when you open it.

But when you double click on the part, make sure the part is not open. Else it will just keep taking you to the part. And not let you edit in the Assembly.

If you create a sketch and extrude whilst not editing the part in the Assembly. Then the changes you make will not go back through to the Part. Which is what is happening now.

Hope this helps?

Thomas.
