Hi everyone
I need som help on converting an autocad-file to 3D solid in inventor (2015).
Its 3d when opened in AutoCAD - or it looks like (i'm an amateur to AutoCAD) - but I cant export it to sat ?
When trying to import the dwg into inventor I just get an empty file (i can open the dwg in inventor - and it works just fine - is pretty useless though)?
Can anyone give me a clou - im generally NOT impressed when importing dwg to inventor - but maybe its just me ? Will it be any easier using solidworks (got an license temporily) ?
Thanks Ebbe FN

Hi,
I agree that importing DWG's from other CAD applications is not very smooth although from other Autodesk products it should be fine.
Else I generally draw the thing again.
BUT, in your case I actually got quite nice results:
So I imported with the following settings:
I attached the new ipt (which probably needs the DWG as reference)

The issue has nothing to do with Inventor or SolidWorks.
The original geometry is not solid geometry, but rather mesh geometry (and poor quality at that).
Trying to work with something like this is sort of like putting lipstick on a pig, it will still be what it is...
I am not impressed with the source geometry - I would start from scratch using this geometry only for reference.
Or request proper geometry from the source.
Looks nice - BUT I tried to replicate this by using the settings you have attached (thanks 🙂 ) - but nothing happens - I still get an empty part when importing the dwg into inventor. I must be missing something ???
I am on inventor 2015 - could that be the problem ? (I will update shortly) - or is something rotten in my system ?? I have similar problems importing 2D dwg's - but its allways been like that 😞
Thanks
Ebbe
Hi,
I used INV2015 Pro, so I don't think that's the problem.
I did my import from the Part environment, not the drawing environment, maybe that is the difference?
As I said for me is importing DWG's also hit-and-miss so if this doesn't help I wouldn't know what the issue could be.
As said by efn, it might be easiest to just recreate the shape in inventor, it's pretty basic.

Create a Screencast of your steps.
Using dwg (2D or 3D) is easy when you know how.
Also, attach any file here that you have trouble importing.
Hi
Thanks for the offer - now the first problem is partly solved (may have to do a quick rebuild as you mention) - but I think I will mail you next time I have to import a 2D DWG 🙂
