DWG File format taking too long to save in Inventor

Hello,

I started a job recently in a company producing facade framework for construction projects, and my job is to model up a set of frames, and then place this model onto pages which can be printed and used by our factory to construct for the customer. Over the last few years, we utilized Inventor to help aid with the design phase, as a lot of our customers would use 3D models to aid construction.

We have found that placing views of models onto DWG format over IDW was more efficient, as we could easily import it into AutoCAD if we needed to. However, it was instantly obvious that it was taking too long for the DWG format to save on my computer, what should have taken a couple of seconds would take 45 minutes. My computer is the first computer in the company to run on Windows 11, and currently the only one that runs Windows 11 with Inventor.

I started out with Inventor 2022, of which the whole business was using at that point, and as of recently, we have all upgraded to Inventor 2023. The same issue occurs. I have been using IDW format in the time between when I started and now, which works just fine, however lacks some useful features which are found in DWG format.

I suspect this would be a Windows 11 incompatibility, but I am willing for any suggestions as to how to fix this issue.

Maybe Anti-virus software or other protection, checking every move you make ?

Disable it for Inventor, Vault, Autocad.

Hi! In terms of file saving, I don't think there should be any difference between idw and dwg. I suspect the dwg may have been corrupted. I have see files like that. There are corrupted viewports and objects. Try opening it in AutoCAD and do Purge All. Does it work better then?

Many thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion, however the problem still persists. It isn't towards one single file, it happens to all DWG format drawings created by Inventor.

This also could be a problem, but I've taken a check through the antivirus apps, and there doesn't appear to be anything out of place. No malware has been detected when scans were run. All computers in the company run with the same antivirus program, and other don't seem to get the problem, so its confusing as to why antivirus would slow my system down when others don't have the same problem.

Hi! If possible, please share an example dwg file that exhibits the long save behavior. I would like to understand it better.

Many thanks!

I've decided to create an example drawing, not an official drawing, to avoid copyright.

This example is a sheet metal part, a somewhat typical example of what we would display on our drawings. The first initial save had the part with dimensions, and was to confirm the document location, which made Inventor freeze for about two minutes. On task manager, the computer appeared to struggle slightly, with power usage for Inventor going from a typical stand-still of very low to very high and the CPU levels pushing a fair bit.

A second save had slight changes, just a few added dimensions and a change to the title block. The save duration, surprisingly, was instantaneous, and the computer didn't struggle whatsoever.

Hi! Many thanks for sharing the file! The dwg file is corrupted. It does not make sense that a simple sheet metal drawing takes up 22MB. I cannot explain how the drawing got corrupted. It could be related to your template.

When I saved the file to idw, it became 1.5MB. I used AutoCAD PURGE/All command to clean up the dwg file, it also went back to 1.3MB.

I suspect the template file you are using is corrupted. Please purge the unused objects.

Many thanks!

Hello,
I had the teammate who initially created the template look into it, and they decided to create a completely new template from scratch, however they found even with a new template, not the original, the same problem occurred.

One thing we have found, though, is that we typically place an image into the title block. This increases the file size dramatically, but hasn't caused any problems for other people in terms of slowing up the entire system. When I sent you the file before, it may not have completely purged the image from the template, keeping the file size high. It wasn't until you purged all the items that it realized the image wasn't there.

Hello,
We seem to have found a solution, to the save time issue.
By putting a lower definition image into the title block, the save time seems to be at a much more appropriate level.
Nonetheless, the reason for why it didn't affect others is completely unknown.
