Dwg as default drawing

Hi All,

Gud Evening ! I am using Inventor 2021 for this spl project. I have been asked by client to use their .dwg template instead of .idw for drawing. My question is how do i attach given .dwg file as default drawing file ? If i save it under template file where others are, will that be enough or i need to do anything more ? Like application options and changing default. Will the i properties come across correctly ?

There are some prompted entries on dwg file given.

Or shud i save dwg in drawing resources of inventor idw template ? Please let me know most efficient way of working with extrnal dwg file template.

Thanks in Advance.

Regards,

Yash

Save it in your templates folder, for instance under the name of Customer_Template.dwg

When starting a new dwg, make sure to choose the appropriate template

Hi @YannickEnrico,

I tried doing it. But i come up with this error. Do i need to save the template in 2021 version to open ?

By default it opened in 2024 but my version of inventor is 2021. See the screenshot of error message.

Please let me know how do i fix it ? My Inventor default is AutoCAD 2018 for opening.

Thanks in Advance.

Regards,

Yash

Unfortunately that means it was saved in 2024 version, and 2021 (even fully updated) is too old to read the file.

Inventor cannot save in old formats, so you either need to switch version, recreate the template, or ask for an older version (there's no guarantee the customer has it, as you'd usually migrate all your stuff when updating, maybe keeping a backup version or two)

Hi @YannickEnrico,

So If i ask the client to send me a 2021 version of the template drawing.dwg, Can i then open with 2021 version of inventor ? I can migrate all to 2024 as last resort. If hey have moved to 2024 then its easier for me. My original version was 2024 only. I just downloaded 2021 as client requested all have it in 2021.

Alternatively, can i set my default AutoCAD to be 2021 Mech instead of 2024? How do i change my default opening version of AutoCAD to be 2021 ?

Regards,

Yash

If you received it in 2021 format and then opened it in 2024 and made the mistake of saving it, you would have converted it from 2021 to 2024.

If that is *not* the case, you might try and explore why they insist it to be in 2021 format, as Inventor isn't backwards compatible anyway (yes, you can open old files, but you cannot save in old versions)

That setting relates to the saving of AutoCAD DWG rather than Inventor DWG.
While the programs can read each other's files, they offer slightly different functionality in their native programs.
I am unsure how you can map the properties from AutoCAD to Inventor

If you create a drawing in Inventor and press save copy as, you can see in the Save As Type box, that you can choose two DWG formats.

You may be able to do the following:

Open the template in Inventor 2024 -> Save Copy As -> AutoCAD DWG

Open AutoCAD 2024 -> Open the drawing you just saved -> Save Copy As -> AutoCAD 2020 DWG

Open Inventor 2021 -> Import the AutoCAD 2020 DWG

You'll still need to populate the title block with intelligent inventor properties, or you have to fill it manually every time

Hi @YannickEnrico,

Client has realised they need to upgrade. So finally they are on 2024. And it works well with AutoCAD 2024.

So issue is resolved by client to get realisation its 2024 n you cannot work on 2021.

Thanks for your help through out.
