Drawing Styles and Templates

Hello all,

Like many, there is frustration with the drawing templates. In particular, a template that conforms to BS8888.

I have spent some time creating a style template that complies. I created this in Inventor 2015, and have successfully used it in subsequent releases. 

I have a friend that has tried to import the .STYXML file, only to be given an error message. This is for a school to use.

Is there any way to solve this, or is it Autodesk yet again making silly frustrations to force customers to change versions? Schools cannot constantly change versions of the software, as this puts far too much strain on education IT services.

Any help or ideas folks?

Hi @Anonymous.

Inventor works this way.

You can`t import a Style that was created in an earlier versión of Inventor but yes viceversa.

A workaround i did to solve this problem is to open the exported file (.styxml) with a text editor (note block) and remplace all "Version=6" with "Version=5".

Hi @Fouad-l,

I was fearing that would be the answer. 

It is disappointing that @autodesk do not allow certain files such as Style or Drawing templates to be open on older versions of their software. 

It is understandable that support for older versions is removed, and I can see some sense in now allowing models or assemblies opening; other files just makes life unnecessarily difficult.

Hi! Drawing styles need to be migrated to current release, because there might be new objects and new settings added to the Style definition. You can use Style Library Manager to migrate the styles.

Sorry, I right-clicked on the style and selected export (see screenshot attached).

My friend then tried to import this .STYXML file, only to get another error.

Are you suggesting there is another way of managing Style templates. If so, could you point me in the right direction.

I tried the method you suggested. I opened the .STYXML file in text-editor. The only 'versions' are 'version="3"', please see the other screenshot.

I can see in the code above many Version=6
So the easier way to remplace all these texts is to go to Edit in the notepad and select remplace. Write Version=6 in the first window and Version=5 in the other, then press Remplace all. Save and exit.
You will then be able to use the style

I am not sure if Styles Library Manger will help in this case. Please see the following link for more detail.

I think the workflow should be fine if you exchange Styles within the same Inventor release. If you are exporting a style from a newer Inventor release and it will be used in an older Inventor release, this workflow will not work.
