Drawing Office Procedures-Projection_1st or 3rd Angle or neither

Hi there all Inventor Users Worldwide

I am wondering whether to post this here or on the CAD Managers Forum.

Maybe Autodesk Invigilators can suggest to me which forum would be suited best.

Logically I would say the cad managers forum, in which case I will either have to repost or

the Autodesk Invigilators can move it for me.

This is aimed at all you CAD Managers (as you call them in USA)  and Drawing Office Mangers (as we call them here in Africa).

I am starting the process of setting up some standard procedures for the company I have just started with.

Previous companies I was with never really bothered with this, but I am wanting to implement it here.

1. When projecting your "2d" views from 1st view you inserted, does anybody worry about whether to

use 1st angle or 3rd angle projection. Or do you  just use labelling instead (ie view in direction of arrow A)

and not worry about which side of the main view, you put the projection.

2. If you do use 1st or 3rd angle projection, do you then put the symbol on your standard titleblock.

I personally would definitely prefer to put the symbol on the titleblock.

Hi Mike

We use "first" angle projection in for our manufacturing drawings.

The reasoning behind this was that the press brake operators hold parts and move them around in a first angle manner.....

Anyway here is a snip of our title block.

Thanks Daren

On a personal basis I have always used 1st angle for a similar reason, for  when you hold the part

and move it around with your hand.

I have also, personally,  always put in the symbol on the title block.

It does make sense, it is easier for the person who has to read the drawing to understand,

and, at the end of the day, that is what really counts.

okay Daren

It looks like we have been setup to 3rd angle projection, and that our Inventor defaults to 3rd angle as well.

The title block also has a space for the symbol

We are also following  SOUTH AFRICAN STANDARD SABS 0111-1 edition 3.1 1993

which is the

code of practice

Engineering drawing

Part 1: General Principles

and in particular page 16 & 17 explain the systems of projection.

I must admit, I have not been in any drawing offices that have followed a standard, or even had a copy of one!!

I think it is very good practice to do so.

At a later date when I get access to the printing and scanning here, I will attach a copy of those pages,

so you can see how it compares to your own national standard.

I remember at one stage, many years ago, working with the BS 308 British Standard.

I assume you have a similar standard in you country
