Does Inventor have Nested BOM capability?

After doing much online searching, and pouring through all the settings on Inventor Pro (2016), I have come to the conclusion that Inventor does not do Nested BOMs/Part lists, and that this is only a function of Fusion Lifecycle. Is that correct?

 

Does anyone have a means of creating nested BOMs/Parts Lists in Inventor through iLogic or VBA?

Hi! Inventor offers two BOM views: Structured and PartsOnly. The former one list all the first-level components. If you want to show the components within subassemblies, you can enable an option to expose all levels. 

The latter, PartsOnly view dissolves all subassemblies. Only parts (including inseparable subassemblies) are listed in the BOM view.

Could you define what you meant by nested BOM?

I am familiar with the Structured vs. Parts Only BOMs...we use both styles for our manufacturing processes. What I was hoping for was to hear that in 2019 or a future version of IV that a nested BOM would be offered...a nested BOM in my mind has multiple layers. Top level in column 1, then assemblies in the Top Level are in Column two, and parts and subs in those are assemblies are in Column three and so on.

Further update to the "nested" BOMs...

Ultimately, we do all of our sorting of the Structured BOM in the Assembly and sort by our appropriate properties. I then export to an excel spread sheet, that data is then then cut and pasted into a macro enabled excel template that looks at item numbers and color codes assemblies and sub assemblies for the shop to use for kitting. It works...

Hi Chad,

 

In terms of how BOM works in general, there isn't much change. The level of customization in BOM is quite limited at the moment. I have heard similar requests but we don't have a good solution yet unfortunately.

Neither do you have a good solution for "smart" text, meaning pulling real information from components in a way that can be tuned to the needs.

 

What I have : an assembly in multiple levels.

 

What I need : smart leader text that lets me decide what level of assembly I want to read. If one of the main components is a pre-assembly, I want to read the description I gave to this pre-assembly. If there are assembled parts in this pre-assembly I want to attach their part numbers. If these parts have components that I want to emphasize I want a bottom level pointer that reads the definition of the thread (as an example).

 

What I have now is leader text that points to the component I'm attaching to, without the possibility of indicating the assembly level.
