Direct edit not available

Hi everyone,

I am using Inventor 2023 and need to scale a part in an assembly. However, Direct Edit is not present in my workspace and when I add it, it remains grey and does not work. Can anyone please help me?

Thanks for your reply. This is not a file-related issue. This happens in any file I open in Inventor. I guess something needs to be changed in the settings, but I don't know what to change.

Are you trying to add the "Direct" command to your assembly environment? Adding the cmd to the ribbon via the inventor customization dialog will add the direct command but direct cmd is not supported in the assy env. and therefore will be grayed out. 

I would recommend doing direct edit inside the part environment. Simply open the part or double-click on it in the browser to edit it. Then you will find the "Direct" cmd in the ribbon and it should be enabled.

Hi! This is one of the known issue in 2023.0. It has been fixed. Please install 2023.0.1 update, followed by 2023.2 update.

I think you are trying to use Direct Tool in assembly features.

Assembly features support only a few tools.

If you are in "assembly context", you have to edit the part, and then you can use Direct Tool.

It seems this is the case. 

@johnsonshiue I had already the latest version of Inventor installed on my computer, however, to make sure, I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. The problem still exists. To me, it seems it has been possible to use "Direct Edit" in the assembly in previous versions.

Direct editing is not available in the assembly environment. View the command icons on the 3D Model tab; this function is not there.

As for your comments:

1. Modeling tools in the assembly have one task - to allow machining of details at the assembly stage. This can be adding coaxial holes in previously joined parts, or final trimming of the part. However, they are not used for modeling in the classical sense.
   Direct editing (in particular scaling) is beyond this scope. That's why there's no icon by default. You added it manually, so it's greyed out. In fact, you cannot suddenly enlarge the profiles or sheets during the welding or bolting process.
2. The video you linked shows the scaling of the part. Check once again. This is a trick that allows you to scale the assembly by creating a derived part - deriving the assembly to the part environment and working on the multi-body part. It's a roundabout way, but it works. The next step would be to export solids to individual part files and build a new, updated assembly (in a new file). This is the video you are referring to.
   If you want to do it in the normal order, you need to scale individual parts.
3. In part environment scaling works. You can successfully model components also by scaling.
