Dimension initially one click or two?

Strange things or maybe I'm imagining it.  What is "normal"?

So just a simple rectangle.  Then, I click dimension, click one side of the rectangle then the other side and position where I want the dimension shown and it drops it in.  Now I have to click again to edit the dimension, but just moments earlier I clicked to position the dimension and edit was already available to change the dimension value (that is I didn't have to click again to edit).  Is there a setting or something to adjust for 1 click dimension editing or is the double click the normal way.  Maybe I was double clicking without knowing?

I am not sure there aren't two different issues in your description.

Your in ipt sketch, right?

1. When placing a dimension you can initially edit if Edit Dimension is activated.

From time-to-time I have accidently deactivated that when using gestures.

Drives me crazy, but easy enough to turn back on.

2. Once dimensions are initially placed though, it is a double click action to edit.

Your in an idw, right?  When you place the dim, check this box in the bottom of the "edit Dimension" window.

You can also access the same thing from Tools > App options, Drawing tab.

Standard ipt part yes.  General dimensioning is checked.  Also edit dimension when created is also selected.  Whatever the initial default install of inventor is, is what it's set at.

So when I click to position the dimension value, should it instantly be editable?  or does it need another click to edit?

Hey, it came back and I have no idea why?

It all of a sudden started working again.  I knew I wasn't imaging things.  I just started a blank sheet and it wasn't working then without doing anything it started working.

You said "Standard ipt part, Yes"..... But then you said you started a "blank sheet".  So are you having trouble working in the modeling (.ipt) or in the drawing environment (.idw)?  Or both?

What version of Inventor are you using?

Sorry if I've mixed up the lingo.  Standard ipt part is where I was experiencing the issue.  No problems now, but if I experience again I will try to recall what happened.

No problem.  I am using 2020 and I think it works the same in this aspect as 2015.  Here is a short screencast showing how to use the "edit dimension"  in a .ipt.  Same thing that JD is showing above.
