It only works for the 'PARENT WORKSPACE' File location. So all the parts from the assembly can be renamed, but I can't rename the assembly itself.

If I want to rename the assembly, I need to put it in another assembly (in that way the new assembly = root and the nested assembly = Parent)

Is it possible to skip this step and just rename the assembly from the first time?

If I'm understanding that correctly, then that is perfectly normal.  You can't rename the file you actually ran Design Assistant from - regardless of whether it's a part, assembly, or drawing.

If the assembly is used in a drawing or as a subassembly in a higher-level drawing, run Design Assistant on that to rename your assembly.  If not, then just rename it in Windows.  The purpose of Design Assistant is to be able to rename the files without breaking links between dependent Inventor files - if there are no dependent links to other files in the first place, then you can just rename it manually.
