Derived Sub from STEP file Issues

I have a client that gets a ton of their components from vendors as STEP files or other neutral files.

We need to create a Derived Sub for these components to be used in the top level assy for numerous reasons.

Problem is, no parts within these assemblies or only a few actually list in the Derive menu.

Is this typical?

OK, some headway, but very confused now.

If I use the process of creating a derived Sub by way of the part browser (rmb on sub folder>create sub), all works fine. So why is the Create icon on the Ribbon menu giving a different result?

Hi! The behavior does not sound right to me. Please share the STEP files with me directly at johnson.shiue@autodesk.com. I would like to understand the Derive behavior better.

Hi Jim,

Many thanks for sharing the files! I see the confusion now. “Create Derive Substitute” command targets subassemblies, not parts. It allows you to select subassemblies and it helps you to create a substitute Model State in the target subassembly. Also, it creates a top-level Model State accordingly. In your case, you will need to demote all the parts to a new subassembly. Then you will be able to select it to create a substitute.

If you want to create a substitute at the top-level, you may simply right-click on the Model States folder or any Model State -> New Substitute.

Thanks again!

Thanks @johnsonshiue , yeah, between chair and keyboard, completely forgot about having to demote.

My apologies.....more rust being shaken off.
