I sometimes have to create Decals (stickers) that go on components. I draw them either as a sketch in .ipt , sometimes I emboss . Then I create a print in .idw Everything works fine for me.
Problem is the Graphic arts guys...the people who print the stuff , cannot work with my file types...even if I offer them .dwg or .dxf.
What file format works well for the graphic art people using ILLUSTRATOR. Does anyone have any insight ?

Try BMP, not sure exactly what they want, but Illustrator can open DWG and
DXF.

If they want a vector format they want something like wmf or eps - but
Inventor can not export as these.
bmp, pcx, gif, jpg & png are not vector - so will look bad/pixelated when
scaled.
1 solution:
save as dxf or dwg - open with AutoCAD and remove the undesired section -
use the AutoCAD command "wmfout" to create a vector wmf file.
Surprised if Illustrator can't import dwg and dxf files - you just might
have to save them as an earlier version, e.g. 2004 or 2000 (and possibly
edit in AutoCAD to strip out the unwanted detail & flatten onto 1 layer).
have just googled "Illustrator dwg import" and looks like they released a
patch to help: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402977.html

I have no experience working in AutoCad believe it or not. I do have the program, however. I will open ACAD and try to find that command. Could you tell me where to start looking ?

I have a fair bit of experience using both illustrator and AutoCad (and Inventor) back and forth. In theory they should both import/export dxf files. The problem is the scale is usually lost between the two. I have found the best solution to be a vector pdf file.

I can create PDFs. I have a utility called CutePDF (not Adobe Acrobat). It creates PDFs but I doubt they are vector PDFs. The question is then, How do you go about creating a vector PDF ? What software is required ? How do you know it's a vector PDF ?

CutePDF is fine. If the subject is vector, typically the pdf is vector. Simply create your pdf and then zoom in on it. You should be able to zoom in quite far and not notice any pixellation. The best way to tell if everything will work for you is send the pdf to one of your coworkers with Illustrator. He should be able to tell you if everything worked fine. If it is not proprietary, I don't mind taking a quick look with Illustrator to help you out.

rasterized elements depending on any bitmaps in the idw), then the pdf will be

Bob S is completely right. As for your attached pdf, it comes in perfectly fine in Illustrator. (I don't have the fonts you used so I cannot see the text though.) It is also properly scaled in Illustrator as well.
I would recommend you use this method to interact with your graphics people, ensuring they have the same fonts you are using.

I use True Type Fonts in Inventor....do I need to send those along with the file ? I think, however, the people using Adobe products use Open type fonts ?

Proper font translation thru pdf to illustrator may be an issue.
If you need the correct fonts you need to make sure that cutepdf
can "embed" the required fonts directly into the pdf file.
