Cylinder Reinforcing

Hello

I tried to model an angular flat bar reinforcement of a cylinder. I managed to create a part that will be OK. The problem is the shop spends hours grinding a chamfer from 1/2 x 1/2, at the ends, tapering down to a zero chamfer at the intersection. Any way I can export a flat pattern without

grinding the chamfers? The Flat bars are 1/2 thick and 3 wide and need to span 36". The cylinder ID 42-7/8 x 43 long. Cant figure out how to upload file/s.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanceFlat bars.png

File..save as.. pack and go

Or just zip up all the ipt files,etc.. into a zip folder and post that too..

the iam is useless without the parts..

Zipped files are too big. Doesn't Autodesk have a "Dropbox" type app?

Do the pack and go again and this time check "skip libraries, skip styles, skip templates"... That should make it much smaller..

@JJarbeau thanks for sharing the files. Are you talking about the chamfer on the inside and outside of the curved piece?

I messed around with this for a bit, the issue is that the lower end curves different than the upper.

I tried to use Loft with center rail and it worked pretty well.

I thought about creating a surface and then thicken but it needs to go both directions and then they didn't meet in the middle. Used Patch then Sculpt to fix the gap, but didn't look right.

Might give you an idea of how to go about creating the crossing pieces.

In the assembly, right click on the part and Replace Component with the attached ones (I suppressed the link so it is not constrained anymore).

Hi,

Here is what I can suggest in order to get the straight edges for the reinforcement bar. Please see the attached files.  I have derived the rib you have got into a new file and then - offset one of the surface. Then trim the resulting solid to make it uniform width. Since the part is flat already by the way it is modeled - there is no need for a Flat Pattern. But you probably will need to twik it a bit to suit the cylinder.

Cheers,

Igor.

Thanks for the kudo, Kelly.  🙂

I looked at what you have suggested - the rib is not flat. It has a twist in it. My part is flat but there is an interference between the rib and the cylinder when assembled. That interference can probably be dealt with on the shop floor. But I will have a look into better modelling of the item later on.

Cheers,

Igor.

Hello again...

Here is an another attempt of mine.  Is that model sufficient enough for your purposes?

Cheers,

Igor.

Thanks Igor. I thought I would need to split the reinf into 4 pcs but couldn't wrap my head around it.

Hi,

I would suggest - two iParts instead. Attached is an example of it.

Cheers,

Igor.
