Cutting through a revolve

There must be some simple reason, but I give up.  I can't seem to cut through my revolve feature.  It's a bowl, which I'm trying to add a pouring spout to, but any sketch I try to extrude/cut through it with does not work.  It gives me an error.  I even tried experimenting with ANYTHING - a simple circle on the plane below, to come up and cut a hole in it.  Still doesn't work!  What in the world am I missing??  (I'm using Inventor LT.)

Pretty tought without looking at the model or what you are doing. Is your cut process going the the correct direction?

Yes, it's going in the correct direction. I can see it kind of ghosted out
going through. but then disappears, with an error.

Can you post some screen captures of what you are seeing/doing.

These show the attempt at the spout, but even trying to cut a simple hole anywhere will fail.   ??

Notice in your browser that you have one solid and two surfaces.  You are trying to perform a solids operation (extrude/cut) on a surface body.  Make the bowl solid, then it will work.

Hummm....  Interesting.

I guess I ended up with that because it doesn't allow me to choose the solid option - only the surface, for some reason (as new attached shows.)  ??

Additionally, if you expand the error message it'll give a rough idea of what's going wrong.

Hi Frank,

The message in RevolveTest-2 is because the profile you've created is open. I'm guessing it's missing an edge where it joins the axis you're using, if you add that edge it should let you make the solid revolution.

As an aside, it helps to attach the .ipt and a video of what you're doing, I usually use Screencast.

Hah!  I now realized WHY it wasn't allowing it to be the "solid" option...  I needed to close it with a line at the axis (see attached.)

Well, I figured it was some stupid mistake 🙂  So, now it's a solid, and I can cut thru it. Thanks!

I'm somewhat new with this, so I'll probably be bugging you guys quite a bit...  hope that will be okay... 🙂

Of course, everyone is on this community to help, glad you've had a good first experience.

Since you're new, it's a good idea just to run through the guided tutorials. If you've already done them then there's loads of other material online (I won't start naming websites but other readers please feel free to suggest your favourites).
