Customized C.C and part dscription

Hi I copy the existing C.C to my customized C.C and set up an express to get the description.

However, the description did not pick up the B_L parameter. The correct member length was not shown in the description.

0.001 is the length of the original profile when they authored it.

Insert one of those parts as a custom part and then open it and interrogate the extrusion and parameters to troubleshoot what is going wrong.

It could also be that the family table has a fixed value instead of being mapped to a parameter.

Looking at picture 1, it appears that you'r trying to combine the parameters into the description which is the way to go, but in picture 2 the text appears to be a set value.

In the description column I would expect all of the text in those columns to be blue, indicating that they are a formula.

Once you've finished with the creating the description from the parameters, it might be worth deleting the column values and forcing Inventor to recreate the values. It sometimes gets stuck and doesn't update them.

I think some issues with regards to the B_L parameter is that it is oftentimes forgotten that the B_L Column in the Family Table should be set to range instead of a 'fixed' value.

Frame Generator seems to still work 'ok' even with the 'fixed' value Length.
It still infers the needed Length value to match the sketchline

It is a range rather than a fixed value.

i inserted them using frame generator...

When open the ipt, B_L in the fx Parameters table, the B_L is not ticked by default. Not sure if that is the reason.. But how to ticked it by default?

And when check the iproperties, the description appears not a expression.. 004.png005.png

hmm. if your minimum and default value there is '1 mm', where did it got the '0.001 mm' Length value in the initial photos above.

Is this change done after you inserted them in Frame Generator? or was that the setting since the beginning?

You can use 'Refresh' command in the 'Frame' Commands to apply changes from the Family Table

on a different note, if you want a formula type of thing, you can probably use the solution here

Sorry, this is a different part from a different standard. 1mm is a length by default.

Sorry for the confusion.

I see the issue now. I had assumed that the same column expressions will lead to the same results when inserting via Frame Generator.
Apparently, my assumption is wrong and that is not the case (might be a bug?).

I don't recall seeing this behavior in the past.

Same expression values but mapped to different iProperties. the one mapped to 'Part Number' is behaving as expected.
While the one mapped to 'Description' is not behaving properly when inserted via Frame Generator.

It does behave as expected when 'Placed from Content Center'.

yes. it does when placing from C.C.

but not in the frame generator.

Thank you anyway.

i tried again. Unfortunately, it did not work.

Is this something that Inventor can not do and can be resolved in future?

Have you tried the solution from this post?

Have your Description in the column something like:
=<Stock Number> - <G_L>

image.png

your Description would have the "fx" icon that denotes it is formula
image.png

and it takes the values from the iProperties "Stock Number" and "G_L"
You may have to update the Family Template to suit your preferred format of the exported parameter G_L

Thank you.

it works. However, it looks like only work if i am using <G_L>. <B_L> did not work.

Maybe i need to edit the family template to tick and export the <B_L> to the formula.

Yeah, you'll have to export the B_L parameter to use it in the similar way.
But usually the G_L is the "final" length.

It accounts for other FrameGenerator commands like trim/extend/miter that changes the length from the original sketchline.
(You can compare the B_L and G_L values to confirm)
