Custom Sketch Symbol equivalent in 3D Annotations

I am looking for help regarding the use of 3D annotations on a model and creating/using custom symbols. The standard drafting environment on a drawing allows for the creation of a "Sketch Symbol", however cannot seem to find the same when applying to a PMI type of Model based definition annotation on the 3D model. There are options in 3D annotation text editor, but only allows for standard ASCII/Character Map symbols and nothing that can be created "special" or "custom".

Any advice is appreciated.

Regards,

Carl

Hello @Anonymous,

You are right, "Sketch Symbol" is a kind of customized 2D sketch which is a standard DWG block other than text type, it is not supported in the 3DA (PMI) environment so far.

Hope it helps!

Something like this?

Note: officially you can't in Inventor

If you don't need to edit text each time, just create the symbol and reuse it, there is a workaround.

Thanks for the advice Xun Zhang.

Hi admaiora,

Your solution does not appear to match the question, as you reference symbols used within the 2D Drafting environment and not for the same as applied in the 3D Environment as custom PMI symbols for Model Based Definition (MBD). The question relates to similar findings in IMAGINiT blog https://blogs.rand.com/manufacturing/2017/08/model-based-definition-with-autodesk-inventor.html

They note;

Pitfall #2 - Missing Annotation Types
A classic 2D drawing contains other annotations beyond the standard dimensions, tolerances, and leader notes.  There are no current 3D annotation support for the following.

  • Bill of Materials / Parts List
  • Balloons
  • Custom Symbols

Is there a way to create a Custom Annotation Symbol for applying to the 3D Model?

Carl
