Ctrl+Tab switching order (recently used order)

Hello,

is somehow possible to switch ctrl+tab switching order? I'm used to use this shortcut like Alt+tab in windows - switch between recently used tabs, but Inventor is cycling from left to right.

(Yes, I know that I can move tabs next each other and use ctrl+tab and ctrl+shift+tab, but this is so workflow destroying.)

Thanks

Hello @j.pavlicek

Thanks for your post.

The combination ctrl+tab is not a native functionality in Inventor, you can use it for most of the Windows applications with multiple documents opened.

I don't think is possible to change the order.

Thanks

The only place in Inventor you can program hot keys is here.

BUT, since this is a MS key stroke, I strongly advise against it.

If it is Windows provided function then OK. Thanks.

But definetly it is possible (to implement this function). Because I'm used to use it this way at least in web browser since 2005 (Opera, Maxthon, Vivaldi).

Maybe topic for Ideastation.

Coming from Solidworks, they have a good window navigation functionality. Ctrl+Tab opens a small overlay of your most recently opened files, very similar to Alt+Tab on windows.

Has this been updated in recent versions of Inventor?

Still not fixed and its now 2025.  Maybe inventor will add the option.  Or maybe I should switch my team to solidworks.

Hi! I am not familiar with the exact workflow in SWX. But Inventor Ctrl+tab cycles through the currently opened documents. Is this what you are looking for?

Many thanks!

In Solidworks you can cycle through the open models using the control+tab.  I use it all the time.

With Inventor, the models have a tab you can select at the bottom of the model window.  I actually found that easier to use and quicker then the control+tab.

My issue with the ctrl+tab functionality in Inventor comes when I have many parts open, specifically parts that have long ID numbers as file names. I have no idea which part on the bottom of the screen is the one I was just working on. This is specifically frustrating when the number of tabs exceeds the window width and I cannot see all the tabs.

There is *almost* a good substitute in the hamburger menu at the bottom right. That opens a list of the open parts that you can hover over and see a preview of the part.

A keyboard shortcut that displays a preview of all the open documents (just like alt+tab in windows) would allow quick navigation between files without cycling through each file.

Also, the ctrl+tab will cycle to the home tab, which I wish I could close.
