Creating Worm and Gear with Design Accelerator

Ribbon --> Design --> Power Transmission --> Spur Gear --> Worm Gear gets me to

which looks pretty impressive but I cannot alter any of the settings.  LMC "OK" takes me to

_GearsFrozen-532x640.png

and selecting "Edit using Design Accelerator" gets me back to the dialog above (and I still cannot alter any of the settings).    AI generates the parts which I can modify

bit I still have the problem that I have a gear (and, presumably, a worm) apparently twice the diameter I want with an unspecified gear ratio.

My trusty textbook and a collection of tutorial videos remain obstinately silent on this issue.  Is there a setting which has locked the editing process?  I had a similar problem three years ago and stumbled across something which set productivity rolling.  I'd appreciate a shove in that direction this time.

Thanks

60 mm dia Gear and 50:1 ratio - if that is possible.

Thanks

Hi Folks

I am still at a loss as to how to adjust settings when using Design Accelerator to create a Gear and Worm set.

I'll appreciate any help.

Thanks

Hello,

the value you are trying to modify is calculated value/ratio based on teeth numbers. Use these 2 fields, where you can specify teeth count. Then ration will be re-calculated. Same for Worm Gear creating/editing.

Thanks for that.  Sorry about the long delay but I got sidetracked (by work Smiley Sad).

Working on what you wrote I realized that I had been trying to change data in de-activated textboxes.  Typical me - always try the hard way!  However, all was not lost and I came up with some settings the machine would accept

and this produced the gear set attached.  Small problem with that -

FirstOffering-385x640.png

As the numbers had predicted the Worm Gear is 25.2 mm thick (I seem to remember that that is an inch (give or take an oz Smiley Wink).  It is also 128 mm (five-inches-odd) in diameter.

I am working on a relatively small prototype the parts for which I hope to 3D Print.  These parts are enormous!  3d Printed parts have a shell filled with less solid parts.  These would be huge consumers of filament.  I can thin out the Worm Gear between the teeth and a central boss, and pull other tricks to reduce the material consumption, but I would be happier if I could reduce the size of these things.

A similar project done in 2016, also with Inventor (2015), produced a 50:1 gear set in which the Worm Gear is less than 60 mm in diameter and only 5 mm thick.  I'd love to get back to that range but I reduced the Facewidth parameter to 5 mm and it promptly jumped to 40.7 mm Smiley Sad

How can I do that?

OK, you need to modify other parameters until you achieve dimension you need while all gear calculation/validation are satisfied. You can modify axis distance as well. The FaceWidth parameter is also under calculation control, can't be anything. Make it smaller and smaller while it stays as you enter. When changed automatically, you hit limit.
