Hi Support,

I have folders and models already but I need to create ipj so I can locate relevant files quickly. I saw youtube video which shows how to create ipj and then create models and folders within. But if we have already folder created with models. can we create ipj and then copy relevant files and folders in it.

Thanks and Regards,

Yash

Create ipj within what you would consider the "master" folder (if there are several associated with the project).

Make the project active.

Open the highest level assembly or drawing.

If you are prompted to resolve any paths, do that now.

Hi Yash,

Yes, it applies to existing folder structures too. Setting up a project can be a tedious process. But, once you know the concept and how it works, it is 5 minutes well spent. Inventor Project consists of three major areas: Workspace, Library, and other options and file paths. Workspace is where the model files (iam, ipt, ipn, idw/dwg) live. It is like a cone. Under the Workspace, you can create sub folders. When the given project is active, Inventor will look for files within the Workspace. This helps you move data from one machine to another easily. Also, it help make data management possible.

The second important area of a project is Library. These folders contain files you don't want to modify. They are like books in a library. You can reference it in your project but you cannot change them. They are well-defined previously already.

Other options and file paths help you set up where \Design Data\ settings, Content Center files, and template files are stored. Once you set up a project file, you are ready to create models.

It is a misconception that Inventor project file is hard to use and hard to understand. For small-size projects, one can get by without using a project file. However, if you are designing mid to large size assemblies and your organization is more than just you, you have to use a project file to manage your data. Please let us know if you have additional questions.

Many thanks!

Hi,

I tried to create a project but it got saved in user/Inventor/folder name destination. Do I change the path at this time or can I copy the project from the default location to actual folder ? Either ways both of them come as shortcut only.

It comes with own workspace so once I create at right path, I can copy existing models and files to this work space. is that right ?

I will try and create at right path because path was prepopulated. o do I create new project from Home screen or get started? I believe none of the models from desired project should be open but can files from other project be open or it shud be created with clean slate (nothing opened) ?

Regards,

Yash

When you create/activate/open a project, Inventor automatically creates a shortcut in the folder you indicated-- that's the list that shows up in the upper part of the Project Editor and Project selector dialogs.  When you delete a project from your list, the shortcut goes away.

Open your Project Editor and find the project file you created in the list-- it will show the location where the .ipj file actually sits.  If this is incorrect, you can move the .ipj file to the correct location using Windows Explorer, and it should work just fine.  Of course the originally created shortcut will no longer be correct, but Inventor will take care of that by deleting the invalid shortcut.
