Create work point from sketch point

I have a design problem where I need to reverse engineer a fairly complex tank structure.
My idea of workflow was to:

make a preliminary design of the tank (part to the left). 
Identify the top of the tank in the point cloud (marked assemble work plane).

Identify the rotation axis of the cylindrical point cloud tank.

Place tank acc. to plane and axis and rotate tank into a certain position and lock it and finish the design.

I have identified the center in the point cloud with a simple assembly sketch which I intend to use to make an axis through this point and normal to the work plane.

Problem here:

I want to create a work point in the center of the sketch circle in order to create the axis, but the "point - On sketch point" command DOES NOT WORK. I can not select the points in the sketch..

Note all object visibility is on.

What am I missing here?

Hi!

You're not missing anything, is the way it works. Assembly operations are meant to do other things than reference geometry (at least, doesn't have so many capabilities then the part sketch). You must have solids to take references from an assembly features.

If you compare the options in the assembly and in the part you will see that in assembly is more restricted:

Tip:

I use a part, which i call it "SKELETON_REFERENCE" or similar, and i constraint that part planes with the assembly planes in the origin and set this part as "reference" to take it off from the part list.

Then, i use this part to take/create my references to use in the different parts and operations.

In this SKEL part, you can use the full capabilities.

Normally, this part only have sketches, surfaces, planes, axis, etc etc.

Thanks. Then I have a better understanding.
I thought of making a part and see if that helped, but I was so sure I could use assembly references. Because, why not.
My point cloud is valid enough to make reference planes and points. Why not an assembly sketch made with the aid of these planes...

For me it feels like a more accurate and dynamic workflow due to the parametric.

all I can say is that this is possible in Creo.  Creo also had a feature to create points using the origin coordinate system which was really handy.  Might be a feature that Autodesk can work on?
