Create an actual thread

Hi All,

Oldie here who retired some years ago.

I have my own copy of Inventor 2011 which I use for making odd items for my model railway using various 3d printers.

That explanation on me done, what I want to do is make a few nuts/bolts on my 3d printers but can't work out how to have a thread cut in a particular item. Is there a way to do this.

There used to be an app for that: threadModeler | Inventor | Autodesk App Store

But they discontinued it on Inventor 2020.  (You might be lucky running it on 2021)

There's now an online version: Home - threadModelerOnline

(If it is just hobby stuff, then you could use Fusion because it models the 3d thread.)

@pomdave  mentioned that he uses the 2011 version.

Nuts and bolts for model railways? Which sizes?

Even if modeling them is no problem, 3D-printing can be.
It depends on filament, printer settings, nozzle size. I normally print threads with standard settings, and do a final cut with thread cutting tools.

Didn't think about using the coil idea. Had a bit of trouble getting the coil drawing right, but finally got there, thanks.

Yeah, really big trains.  No, seriously what I was after was a cap style nut to go over the ends of silicon and glue tubes to save wasting the nozzles and getting them clogged up.
