create 2D drawing using stl format file

Hello

I had designed a wind turbine blade. I had saved it as stl file because the blade softaware not support for 2D drawing. Then, i open the blade in autodesk inventor 2013 and save it again in ipt format. The problem is I still cannot make the 2D drawing in inventor. Can you help me to solve this problem.

Regards

You will need to download the InventorMeshEnabler add-in to convert to solid.

You attached an image file - not mesh feature.

Autodesk Subscription customers can get the mesh enabler for Inventor, including Inventor 2013, from the Autodesk App Exchange. For students who free access to our software, such as Inventor, but no Subscription benefits, they email me at scott.sheppard@autodesk.com, and I send them a link to the mesh enabler.

Scott;

I'm a mentor  on a FIRST Robotics team.  I assume we are using the Student license for FIRST.  My problem is that we 3D print many parts and none of them show up on assembly drawings when imported into Inventor 2019 and added to an assembly.

Some of our parts were made in Inventor, others were made using other software.  All I have are STL files.  We would really like to know how to get them onto a drawing.

Thank you

@ksanger  Did you see the email Scott posted?

Use it Smiley Wink .. Ask him for the link to the mesh enabler if you want the ability to work with/modify mesh geometry from STL files...

However..

Just to create a drawing all you need to do now is simply check the "Include Mesh Bodies" in the Recovery Options of the place view dialog box and you can place views of mesh models without using that utility..

Hi! This is a very old thread. Yes, Brian is right. To create drawing views of mesh model, you no longer need to use Mesh Enabler to convert mesh to brep. On Inventor 2018 and later, you can simply include mesh in the drawing and you can also dimension to the mesh directly. It should work just like Brian described.

You can certainly keep using Mesh Enabler (available for download on Inventor App store).

Many thanks!

Enabling Mesh's on the drawing view worked great.  Thank you.

Has this been resolved? Creation of a 2D stl would be pivotal for my graduate research. Any insight is appreciated!

@Anonymous  Did you read the replies by me in this post?

You can create drawings of stl files without having the mesh enabler now by checking the options I show in the image above..

Hi! Yes, Brian is right. As of Inventor 2018, you can simply create drawing views of mesh model without having to convert it to Brep via MeshEnabler. You need to make sure the following option is checked.

Create a view or edit an existing view -> Recovery tab -> check Include Mesh Geometry.

Many thanks!

Thank you very much! A different alternative was found to import xy coordinates of polygon vertices into Matlab, but this is great to know!
