Crashing when exporting 2026.2

Hi, 

I am currently facing an issue with Inventor. I am somewhat new to inventor I used to use it long ago but we are talking decades at this point. I currently use Fusion 360 for my business and I am having issues with it being extremely slow on huge assemblies, so I am trying to give Inventor a shot to see if it will better handle my project and oh boy Inventor's sheet metal tools are so much better than what I have in fusion this alone might push me to switch.

I am having 2 really weird export issues that will not go away even on reinstall. This happens with all exports it seems, I have modeled a very simple and clean sheet metal part for this test. 1 contour flange, 1 cut, 1 corner chamfer.


I then Export this as a Step file. This is where issue one happens. When on the Export dialogue if I scroll through the names and quickly select anything, it takes about 3 seconds for the name file format to update and a few times I accidentally export during this time causing the whole program to crash as its trying to export another format as the default .dwg. So if I have not saved anything in that window is sent to oblivion (I know I don't have much patience its more of a habit exporting quickly than me trying to rush).

And issue 2 happens very often where specifically the Step export can hang for ages, it does not crash but freezes the window for a very long time, I have to force close the instance in task manager. This does not always happen and once I did leave it for a long time and it exported but the step was somewhat corrupted.

I assume at least the 2nd issue is either because I have OBJ 3d scans in the ipt file or and issue with the translator as for issue 1st I am not sure if this is normal.

Can anyone advise if I have a corrupted install or any steps to try update or fix this issues? I am on Build 298 2026.2

Hi Juan,

Are you trying to include the mesh in the exported STEP file? Regardless, the behaviors do not sound right to me. If possible, please share the ipt file with me directly at [email protected]. I would like to understand it better.

Apologies I have been busy and did not reply, I emailed Johnson this morning and sent him the ipt file. But since making this post I have figured the issue is due to the 3d scan mesh in the file. A lot of the times I have the scan data hidden (not suppressed) and when I export the step file it crashes the whole window and all other open files. This does not happen with other export formats. 

I have now started suppressing the 3d scan before step exports but my main issue is just that because I am hiding the scan while working sometimes I forget I need to suppress it and I lose everything that is currently open which is frustrating. I am assuming this issue is due to a corrupt step exporter as it works fine with other formats.

The scan files are .obj re-meshed and decimated. 

The next thing I want to know is if this is application wide or just an issue with my setup.

Hi Juan,

I had trouble getting the file from Google Doc. Your finding could explain the reason. The crash should be file-specific in this case. Probably the massive mesh overwhelms Inventor. When Inventor crashed, did you submit the crash report? If yes, please share the report ID with me directly at [email protected].

Hi Folks,

Just to share some update on this issue, I have received the file Juan shared with me. Without disclosing the detail, I can comment as such. The hang is indeed confirmed. It seems to be specific to the scanned mesh object in the ipt file. Interestingly, exporting it to STEP 214 seems to work fine (skipping the mesh).  But exporting to it to STEP 242 does hang. I need to work with the project team to understand it better. In the meantime, either export it as STEP 214 or suppress the mesh before exporting should work.

It is a general problem with step export. In my project - it does not work at all (or hangs for days, I don't know, I need to kill fusion after an hour of rainbow wheel spinning). In a small project - with just one body - it takes ridiculous time, like minutes.
