Copy/Paste parts without constraints

A past version of Inventor would allow you to copy several parts (pipe/beam) from an assembly model, and paste them into another assembly where each piece is aligned end-to-end (with an offset in the transverse direction).  This was extremely useful in estimating total pipe/beam quantities.

With Inventor 2014, it seems that the paste command retains the constraints between the parts.  Is there any way to paste several parts into an assembly without constraints, and have them align end-to-end as before?

If you use the the WIndow-Crossing in the model window to enclose the parts, any constraints between the parts enclosed should be copied over. Check to make sure you are current on all SP's and Updates. I'm sure one of the updates had something to do with this topic.

I think the OP doesn't want this "include constaints" feature on copy/paste. I'm not sure that this feature can be turned off or excluded during the copy/paste.

The 2014 What's New document includes the new function but no information on how (or if even possible) to de-activate it.

The only way the copied items would be brough into an assembly aligned would be with constraints copied over. I think using the Control^C and select each item in the Model Window and then Control^V to paste it into the other IAM. You need to have both IAM files open, much easier side by side.

The easiest way to get pipe length totals would be to us CC parts. You can easily rollup the lengths for each by adding columns to your BOM for each CC file used. It won't get you the complete total, but it will help

Having the ability to copy and paste without bringing over any constraints was helpful in estimating quantities as shown in the screenshot previously taken from Inventor 2012.  The beams/pipe would automatically align end-to-end.

The BOM table within Inventor would be a secondary option, however, there are limitations.  I believe it can only output lengths of members created through Frame Generator, and I believe the lengths are based on node-to-node distances which does not account for coping and trimming of beams to one another.  Since the paste feature has changed for 2014, I am hoping there is an option to paste without constraints (as before).

If I remember, back in the 2012/2103 this was considered an enhancement where most individuals wanted the constraints between copied parts carried over as well.

I guess it would be nice to have the option, you can always add this request/enhancement to the Idea Station: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideastation/idb-p/v1232

The ability to Paste with constraits was a highly requested Enhancement that was implemented in 2014.  Maybe having an option in Application Options>Assembly tab to toggle this would be a good addition?

As other have mentioned, this is done in the Idea Station: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideastation/idb-p/v1232

In the meantime, you'd have to expand the Relationships folder in the Model Browser and suppress or delete the constraints in tha assembly.

With newer versions of Inventor the old school copy only works when you drag and drop from explorer.

I think an application option to set the wanted behavior is a good solution.

Suggestion has been added to IdeaStation.

Thanks for the support.
